By Anthony Voronoff It is hard to win the struggle against excess weight if you do not possess the sufficient information on your "opponent". But it is almost impossible to find a beautiful figure, being guided on well-wishers' advices: whether it be the old girlfriend or the neighbor-fellow traveler in a train. Narrow-minded representations about the reasons of obesity carry the set of mutually exclusive recommendations. As a result it is too easy to get confused and disappointed. Here are the most widespread myths and misconceptions. I have got a power, I have got a will, but I haven't got a will-power Perhaps, the main charge, shown to "fat men", is that they do not have will power to stop eating! Sounds like all slim people have "iron character", and all fat men are weak-willed and spineless; and they cannot control their eating with their own efforts, therefore it is necessary to search for the means directed on appetite suppression. At the same time it is scientifically proved that as a rule, fat people don't always eat more than slim ones. Well, I have got such metabolism "I cannot lose weight because I've got slack metabolism" - an idea which very seems pleasant to many fat people who are inclined to a complacent fatalism. Often such thoughts are compensation for the unwillingness to make at least minor efforts for weight loss. In reality, slowed-down metabolism is a disease of people with underactive thyroid gland. Only an endocrinologist can make such diagnosis, usually by means of special analyses can only. The self-diagnostics can turn wrong. We cannot choose our parents The overweight people are often are believe that obesity was inherited to them by their corpulent parents, and is really an inevitable "evil". Therefore, the treatment of excess weight is pointless, as they believe. You cannot cheat the nature ", - they argue, eating the next roll. Actually, genetic predisposition to thickness is proved by nobody. But researchers noticed that if adoptive child is taken into a family of overweight men, who doesn't suffer from excess weight, in a while he too will get fat. Here is a conclusion: struggling against your excess weight, change your life style, your nutrition system - and you will change yourself! Single-o The majority of people suffering from excess weight prefer to be engaged in self-treatment. Recommendations of the doctors are considered equal with girlfriend's advices. It is necessary to understand that the problem of excess weight is not too harmless. You don't not ask the neighbor how to cure the broken leg, do you? Giving away your health in others' hands - it is simply precipitate! If I quit smoking - I'll get fat "I'd be glad to quit, but I am afraid to get fat" - an excuse widespread enough. Really, nicotine is anorexic - the substance reducing appetite. Smokers know that a cigarette smoked before meal muffles their appetite. When a person quits smoking, the organism asks for some "compensation" for refusal of cigarettes: it would be desirable to suck at some sweets. Thus, refusal of smoking entails the increase of appetite. But refusal of cigarettes itself does not lead to weight gain or any metabolic shifts in organism. If one habit changes another and the person starts to gain weight, half an hour of jogging in the morning or in the evening with compensate any unpleasant consequences over and above. Birthday Party Themes -- the road less traveled?
By Neal Lohse Is party theme planning dead? ...as the smoke cleared the child asked: "What did you wish for this time Mommy?" And the reply: "The same thing each year darling, the same thing" Little did she know her Mother was crying out for a themed birthday party. She wanted a party she didn't have to plan herself! "I wished for a well planned birthday for me!" The problem... In a time poor world you can hear the sharp intake of breath as people steel themselves against a question as old as time: "What are we going to do for her birthday?" The question of a theme will inevitably get asked and if the Planning Person is not lush with time or flush with cash it might usher in card-cake-gift time. No plan. Just reaction. But is this reaction just? What stops many a party in it's tracks is a warped perception of time and money. Clever party theme planning is one way to side-step these obstacles and the good news is it can cost half as much and take next to no time.
Half the cost. Half the time. The value of having a theme... A well planned theme -- around anything related to the person in question -- will have massive , m-a-s-s-i-v-e, MASSIVE impact. Why, you ask? Well, it shows thought and was not expected. What about the reverse? Give them something that takes no thought and is expected....gets you out of a pickle but the impact is: "oh, gee thanks." The trick is not in the theme, it's in the party theme planning. I am not talking about extravaganzas and high society bashes. Those are the domain of the J-Lo type Party Planners -- remember dear Jen in the Wedding Planner? -- who are radio mic'd up to the armpits and even have the bugs in the hedge choreographed.
Not them. You. Good old you at work, you at home you who have real people for family and friends and would love to do something different for them. A simpler party theme planning approach is the go. Some considerations include: The B-day person What do they like? Think of the impact on them. Reasons for having a Theme Why? Milestone to remember? Whatever the reason, be clear about it. Your skills and resources Are you ready to put your ALL into this?
What do you have or can do that will make it work? Time to delivery What's this like? If the time is short, reduce the number of theme elements (ideas) or bring in more help. Help Needed to pull it off Don't do it solo. Get others to help you. Little Touches People remember details important to them. Add small personal touches that link in with the theme. A party theme planning MUST have! It reduces cost and builds impact. Cost Many theme elements can be done with more thinking than money. Always ask: "How could I do this for no cost..?"
If cost isn't the issue -- get others to do it and pay them. Spread the Enthusiasm Build up the momentum slowly. Under-hyping is BEST. Careful party theme planning will take care of this. A Run-Sheet is a MUST have No mater how small, what age or how many people. ALWAYS use a run sheet. Can be a basic as what-where-when-who. Memory Variety If you are capturing the party for memories use a few different methods. How many can you come up with? A word or two on themes... They can be anything.... Really. All you have to do is look closely and there will be a theme hovering. Imagine a family of four who want to consider party theme planning as a family. For a mother think about appreciation, a dad maybe it will be sense of adventure. A brother could be "Pain in the...butt we love 'im" and for a sister you could think along the lines of "Thelma and Louise - two gals taking on the world.." I was once able to make a family party out of my wife's love of patchwork quilting!I knew nothing about it, save what she had told me and what I had seen her do. A few magazines, a bit of fabric, some of the "quilting lingo" and the rest unravelled. One final tip... Give the Party / Occasion a Name. Create an identity that can be talked about later on. Instead of: "er...yes, I recall Bob's 35th ..sort of..pub-thing with cowboy hats or something...." How about: "... Of course I remember "Top Dog Bob and the Bandits Where all us guys got to be cowboys at a steak bar, hog-tie Bob to a table and tell him how much of a friend he'd been to us? Oh, yeah! All the while we drank snake-bite juice -- green colored beer --, ate prairie dog vomit -- mini pizzas -- and cheered when they brought out the Rattle Snake cake. We sang C & W songs and howled at the moon on the way home." Party Theme Planning Stats:1 Theme, 1 Name, 7 Idea elements, and in 2-3hrs you have wonderful set of memories..and a frightened moon. Maybe it's a guy thing... but, can you see the difference? Remember to plan well partners. It shows thought, was not expected and was how people were won over into using themes. Yee-haa! Gardening through a Drought or How to Sprinkle your Water Wisely
By James Kilkelly So you find yourself in the middle of the worst drought within living memory and your garden occupants are starting to sag, flag and wilt. Which plants should be watered first and which plants should receive the main quantities of the irrigation? You begin to feel like the leader of a third world country trying to spread your counties meagre budget across healthcare, military and education. Never fear, let me dampen your worries with some drought advice. First to receive the H2O Recent plantings are top of the list for regular watering, if water is available. New plantings such as bare-root trees or shrubs planted the previous autumn / winter, with newly planted perennials also at great risk from drought damage. You see these new plantings have not had much time to produce water-seeking roots, the type of roots that travel deep and wide for moisture. Because of this, we must supplement the plants natural water supply. During a hosepipe ban, recent plantings of annual bedding summer bedding such as marigolds, impatiens, Nicotiana etc should be regarded as probable casualties of the water war. If I had a limited supply of water to divide between a Japanese maple and some annual bedding, I am afraid the maple would receive the lions share and to hell with the bedding. As a rule of thumb, if the soil 5cm (2 inches) below the grounds surface is dry, then it is time to water. The following is short list of plants can cope with a short period of drought, once established Brachyglottis, Corokia, Gleditsia, Halimiocistus, and Hippophae. Container plants during a drought Next on the water-receiving list are containerised plants, hanging baskets and window boxes. Essentially a containerised plant is growing above the ground water table, with just the soil inside the container to provide the required moisture. If the moisture is not inside the container, then I am afraid the roots have nowhere else to go to quench the plants thirst. Again, if the compost 5cm (2 inches) below the pots surface is dry, then it is time to water, it is up to the gardener to provide that water when required. Try to provide a catch plate or tray beneath containers, these catchers will contain any excess water that will eventually be absorbed in the compost. Be aware that terracotta and other porous container materials absorb a good quantity of water that the plant is then unable to access. The following is a short list of container bedding plants that can cope with a short period of drought, once established Arctotis, Lantana, Plectranthus, Portulaca and Zinnia Vegetables and fruit during a dry spell Provide adequate quantities of water for moisture-hungry vegetables such a tomatoes, peas, onions, cucumbers, marrows and lettuce. Insufficient supplies of water will lead to miniature, shrivelled and limp specimens. Fruiting plants such as strawberries, raspberries, currants, apple and pear trees are also very moisture hungry especially while their fruit is forming. Notice how much water is within a strawberry or pear the next time you eat one of these delights. Water-content figures of 70 to 90% are quoted for fruits and vegetables, regardless of whichever quantity is correct, you must supply that water during a drought. Plants growing in an exposed or wind swept area will require a fair quantity of supplementary water during a drought. Have you ever gone for a bracing walk on a windy day, upon arriving home, you smile at your spouse, children or pet and realise that your lips are cracked and chapped, ouch! This illustrates the severe drying element of a strong breeze, plants leaves are constantly being dried out and then remoistened by water from the soil when available. During a drought, if that water is not present the leaves will dry up, shrivel and shed. This is known as the desiccation of foliage. Watering deeply will prevent this happening. Shallow rooters and moisture lovers Shrubs and trees that are shallow rooted or have a particular liking for moist soils are quite at risk during a drought period. The shallow rooted specimens include Rhododendron, Azalea, Heather (Erica), Hydrangea and Birch (Betula). The moisture lovers include Hosta, Ferns, Helleborus, Sarcococca, Fatsia and Camellia. If water is available, please allocate some to these plants. Climbers or wall-shrubs planted close to house walls will struggle for moisture at the best of times, due mainly to the rain-shadow cast by the house itself. Do not forget to water these wall huggers. The following is a short list of climbers that can cope with a short period of drought, once established Clematis Montana, Fallopia, Jasminum, Trachelospermum and Vitis. Lawns during a hosepipe ban During a drought, the first part of the garden that people tend to water is the lawn. This is probably because lawns usually make up quite a quantity of most gardens and these lawns tend to look burnt earlier than many plants. However, the lawn would be the last form of plant life within my garden that would receive any rationed water. Lawns are more resilient than you may think, a green lawn that becomes browned off due to water shortage will eventually return after a few heavy rain showers. The burnt piece is the foliage above ground; the roots below ground will sit tight and wait the dry spell out. Of course, lawns comprised totally of fine grass will be damaged significantly by prolonged dry weather, but you should have no worries if your lawn is sown with a utility seed mix (No. 2 or Manhattan mix). How to apply water during a drought (if water is available) I find sprinklers are quite wasteful of the available albeit rationed water, instead I would choose either hand watering or seep watering. With hand watering you direct your watering can or hose to the base of your chosen plant, water deeply at a rate of approx 10 litres per metre squared. Watering lightly will do more harm than good as it encourages surface rooting, which is easily damaged. On many dry soils, water applied directly will tend to run off over the soils surface and away from the plants base, if this happens try the following trick. Sink a two-litre pot filled with gravel at the base of the plant, water slowly into this pot and you will have no run off problems. Seep watering, also known as drip irrigation is an effective and economical way to apply much needed moisture directly. Most well stocked garden centres will sell seep hose or porous pipe, which you will weave between plants within your beds and borders. This seep hose when connected to a water supply will slowly ooze water through small holes along the length of the pipe. It is extremely direct and efficient. Sweet Low Carb Foods - How Do They Do That?
By Mike Boyd If you're a low carb diet enthusiast, you've probably tried some of those tasty low carbohydrate bars, candies or maybe even broke down and baked a loaf of that really easy to make and great tasting low carb banana bread. And after getting your head around the concept of 'net carbs', you may still be wondering what are those sweeteners listed on the labels, such as mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol and others, and how they fit into your Atkins, Protein Power, South Beach or other diets. Known as sugar alcohols, these and other low carb sweeteners are being seen more and more in diet products. And usually you can find several types in your low carb food. Although they are all effectively no to low calorie sweeteners (0.5 to 3.0 calories per gram) they are generally much sweeter than sugar, which allows even the higher calorie per gram products to be classified as low carb and low calorie sweeteners. The reason you'll see a number of them in your low carb chocolates for instance, is simple. The food tastes better. Food technologists have found that different combinations of low carb sweeteners can have a better flavor in certain foods than when using one type alone. For instance, if you're making muffins, you want a sweetener that can stand up to the heat of an oven. But if it won't give you the texture or 'mouth feel' you'd expect, then it won't be popular, no matter how low the carbohydrate count. If you were making a chilled low carb dessert or a low carbohydrate ice cream, you'd want it to be sweet when cold. So the bottom line is taste. Given recent attention to protein based fat replacements, which have great potential for use in all but fried foods, its easy to imagine that some new and tasty low fat, low carb, higher protein and low calorie treats will be coming soon. And that has brought out some strange concerns, such as the idea that if we're not protected from ourselves by banning these foods, we might starve by consuming too few calories from these low and no calorie dessert and snack foods. But after looking at some of the shoppers I saw during a recent trip to my grocery store, all I could think was, where's my

Baking Cookies
By Ann Krause So youre thinking of baking cookies on your own but dont know where to start, well you have come to the right place, I can tell you what to do.
First you will need the proper tools, a five quart mixes, or even a four quart mixer will do, a small ice-cream scoop, measuring spoons, bowl scraper, a good rolling pin, some table spoons, baking sheets, parchment paper, which you can purchase at a local grocery store in the baking section, and of course a good recipe. When preparing to make your cookies read and understand your recipe, make sure your eggs are at room temperature, weigh and measure all your ingredients before you start, baking cookies is as easy as you make it or as hard as you make it, once you get the general idea of baking cookies you will love it. Make sure that your oven is preheated to the proper temperature, some people think that you can start baking in a cold oven or an oven just as they turned it on, well it wont work. Prepare your cookie dough according to your recipe, roll out your cookie dough then cut into shapes and place on cookie pans with parchment papers, or they may be drop cookies, in this case drop your cookies on the pans far enough apart so they have room enough to bake.
Decorating your cookies before or after baking is important for eye appeal, the better they look the better they will taste. You can decorate your cookies with colored sugar, colored jimmies, colored icings and so on, whatever you decide to do, do it well, baking cookies is an art. An ADD Case Study: What Does it Mean to "Fail"?
By Jennifer Koretsky Josh is a client of mine who is a junior in college. He's very smart. He's amazingly smart. Talk to Josh for an hour and you'll know how smart he is. But if you don't know Josh and you look at his grades from previous semesters, you would probably guess that he wasn't smart at all. Josh gets frustrated in school. He works hard, but often finds that the pressure of test taking overwhelms him, and his grades suffer for it. Recently, Josh had a midterm in his Economics class. He knew it would be tough. He hates this class, but it's required for his Business major. He had one test in the class already, which he did not pass. For the midterm, there were 3 books to review, and pages upon pages of notes to memorize. But he was determined to get an A. Three weeks prior to the test, he began setting aside review time. He highlighted the books, and took notes on them. He rewrote his notes to memorize them. And he even formed a study group with some of his classmates. The morning of the test, Josh felt good. He had plenty of rest the night before, he ate a good breakfast, and he was ready to ace his Economics test. He got to the classroom, ready to go, and when the test was handed out and he flipped through it, he froze. The test was four pages long, with short answer questions, math problems, and an essay. Even though he had studied so hard, Josh started to doubt himself. He did his best to push past the anxiety and overwhelm and finish the test. Then he went back to his dorm room and slept. He was physically and emotionally spent. A week went by before Josh got his test back. It was a B. He had studied so hard, he knew the material, and yet all he got was a B. He was crushed. "I did the best I could, I worked so hard to overcome this test-taking fear, and I failed." "What exactly did you fail at?" I asked. "I got a B," he replied. "I put so much work into that test that I should have got an A." For Josh, it was very easy to look at the situation and see failure. He wanted an A. He wanted to prove to himself, his parents, and his professor that he could ace this test. And Josh was so busy holding himself up to unrealistic expectations, that he completely missed his successes: He stuck to the structure that we created for him. He developed excellent study habits to prepare for the test. He got a B! He answered approximately 80% of the questions correctly, when just a month ago he wasn't passing the class. I pointed this out to Josh and, although he listened, he only half-heartedly agreed. Then, two days ago, I got this email from Josh: "Dear Jen, I got my philosophy test back today and guess what, I got an A-! I thought about what you said and realized that I have been doing really good studying this semester and I am doing better than I ever have. My dad is so excited about my B and A-. Thanks for pointing it out because sometimes its hard to see the good stuff." I agree. Sometimes it is hard to see the good stuff - whether you're a student, an artist, an office worker, a business owner, or a parent. When that happens, look harder. Even if you "fail," you'll still learn something about yourself or the situation you're in. And if you're learning, then you're really not failing, are you...? This story was shared with Josh's permission. About The Author Jennifer Koretsky is a Professional ADD Management Coach who helps adults manage their ADD and move forward in life. Men Who Are Successful With Women Either Know How To Seduce Women, Attract Women, or Both
By Teddy Shabba When it comes to men who are successful with women you the three most successful type of men are going to be those who seduce women, attract women, and the most successful all those who do both. Now it is important to understand that every man has the ability to attract and seduce women it simply is a matter of how much he wants to work on his abilities of attracting women that determines how successful he becomes. Men who seduce women are only concerned with the approach and the initial meetings. Men who only seduce women usually are found exclusively at bars, clubs, and first or second dates. Although they can be fooled or tricked into a relationship it would be wise of men who simply seduce women to avoid a relationship at all costs since a woman willing to get into a relationship with a man who simply seduced her has got a bigger agenda than a man who seduces women is going to want. Depression - Symptoms, Causes and Treatment options
By Knut Holt Depression is a complex of psychological and physical symptoms. Low mood level or sadness is often the most prominent symptom. The common property of these symptoms is a decreased activity level in parts of the brain. THE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION Depression may give one or more of these symptoms: -Low mood level or sadness. -Lack of joy or interest in activities that were joyful before. -Pessimism. -Feel of guilt of something without any substantial reason to feel so. -Inferiority thoughts. -Irritability. -Slowness in the thought process. -Slowness in interpreting sensorial stimuli. -Slowness of digestion or other internal physical processes, and symptoms caused by this slowness, for example inflated stomach, constipation or difficulties by urination. -Slow physical reactions. Depression can be a mild disease that only causes some annoyance in the daily life, but can also get very serious and make a person totally unable to work and unable to participate in social life. By depression of some severity, there is also a greater risk of suicide. Depression can occur in all age classes. In teenagers lack of interest in school work, withdrawal from social life and difficult mood can be signs of depression. THE PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES THAT PRODUCE THE SYMPTOMS By depression there is a decreased amount of neurotransmitters in parts of the central nervous system, mainly deficiency of serotonin, but also to some extend of noradrenalin, acetylcholine, dopamine or gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), or the nerve cells do not react properly by stimulation from neurotransmitters. A neurotransmitter is a signal substance that transmits the nerve signal through the junctions between two nerve cells. Serotonin and noradrenalin cause nerve cells to send impulses along to other nerve cells, and thus increase the activity in the brain. Deficiency of these substances causes slowness in parts of the brain, and that again causes the depressive symptoms. The role of GABA is the opposite, namely to slow down some nerve impulses, mainly those causing anxiety and panic response. Lack of GABA causes higher anxiety and easier panic response. Yet, lack of this transmitter also seems to cause depressive symptoms. This is because a too high activity in some brain processes may slow down other processes. There are many causes and subtypes of depression with different physiological mechanisms involved. TYPES OF DEPRESSION Depression is often divided into subtypes according to exhibited symptoms. 1. Mono-polar depression and dysthymic disorder By mono-polar depression there are pure depressive symptoms. Mild cases of mono-polar disorder that do not affect a persons ability to work and to participate in social activities are often called dysthymic disorder. 2. Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disease) and cyclothymic disorder In this condition there are periods with symptoms of depression - the depressive phase, alternating with periods of elevated mood level with increased mental and physical activity - the manic phase. In the manic phase, the affected person also sleeps poorly and has concentration difficulties. A mild form of this disease is called cyclothymic disorder. 3. Manic disorder This condition is characterized by abnormally elevated mood, by unrealistic optimism, by lack of sleep and by hyperactive behaviour. Many psychiatrists think that this disorder is simply the same disease as bipolar disorder where the depressive face has not yet occurred. 4. Depression with mainly physical symptoms Sometimes the physical symptoms of depression are alone or dominant, as for example: Digestive problems, constipation, difficulties with urination, slow response to sensorial stimuli or slow physical reactions. CAUSES OF DEPRESSION Two or more factors can have an effect simultaneously to cause depression. Depression can be an independent disease, or a part of other disease. Depression is also divided into different subtypes according to cause. 1. Reactive depression This disease is simply a result from psychological stress, physical struggle or mental straining without proper rest or sleep over a long time period. The straining will simply wear out the nervous system or deplete the organism from nutrient necessary for the nervous system to work properly. 2. Endogenous depression When there has not been any period of stress, straining or lack of rest that can explain the condition, the condition is often called endogenous depression. Inheritance is thought to be a part of the cause. 3. Depression by physical disease Depression or depressive symptoms may be a symptom of physical disease. This is perhaps the most common cause of depression. Diseases often associated with depression are: Heart disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, hypertension or Cushing's syndrome. Mononucleosis or flu may trigger depression that continues after the infection has gone. By lack of thyroid hormones, hypothyroidism, the metabolism in the whole body is slowed down, including the production of neurotransmitters in the brain. Therefore depression is an important symptom of hypothyroidism. 4. Depressive symptoms as a consequence of unsound lifestyle A general unsound lifestyle with too less exercise, too much of stimulants like alcohol, coffee or tea, too less of important nutrient and too much of sugar and fat may give depressive symptoms, as well as physical problems. 5. Postnatal depression Women will often have a period of depression after pregnancy and berth of the baby Pregnancy and berth is physically and mentally exhausting, and may drain the body for nutrient. This in turn can cause depressive symptoms 6. Seasonal affective disorder Depression can occur in cold and dark periods of the year and go away in warm and light periods. Light stimulates brain activity, and lack of light is a causative factor. TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION Serious or prolonged depression is often treated with anti-depressive medication. Medicines used against depression generally increase the level of neurotransmitters like serotonin in the central nervous system, or they mimic the neurotransmitters. The medications mostly used today increase the serotonin concentration by decreasing the removal of serotonin from the space around nerve cells. Examples of this medication type are: Fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), escitalopram (Lexapro, Celexa), sentraline (zoloft). By bipolar disorder in the manic face, heavy tranquilizers (neuroleptica) are used to stop the manic symptoms. By bipolar disorder, lithium salts are sometimes used to stabilize the condition, and prevent new outbreak of depressive or manic faces. Psychotherapy is sometimes used by depression, usually in combination with medication. Sometimes serious depression is treated by applying electric shock through the head, electroconvulsive therapy. The shock induces epileptic eruption of nerve signals through the brain and this gives cramps throughout the body. The cramps are alleviated or stopped by applying anaesthesia before the electroshock. This form of treatment is controversial, since it can cause memory loss and is suspected of causing brain damage. The possibility of brain damage is however denied by most psychiatrists. By seasonal depression, light therapy maybe useful. Adjustment of lifestyle should always be considered by depression or depressive symptoms. Lifestyle measures can sometimes be enough to cure depressive symptoms before a serious depression develop. Lifestyle adjustments can be: - To slow down a stressful life with too much work or activities. - Enough rest and sleep. - A good diet with enough of necessary nutrients. - Some physical exercise. - Meditation. - Supplement of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, lecithin, amino acids and essential fatty acids. - Stimulants like coffee or tea may help against depressive feelings in moderate amount. However, if you are a heavy user of these stimulants, you should cut down on your consumption. There exist nutritional products in the marked to help against depressive symptoms. These contain ingredients that the brain uses as building blocks for neurotransmitters, for example amino acids and lecithin. They also often contain vitamins and minerals that the brain uses as tools to produce neurotransmitters, especially vitamin B6. Supplements may further contain herbal extracts that trigger higher brain activity much like anti-depressive medications, but may have fewer side effects. New Cord Blood Stem Cells Therapy
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Greg_White] Greg White Cord blood stem cells are human cells that have the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body. These cells come from umbilical cord blood that can be saved after the birth of a baby. Similar to embryonic stem cells, which are very controversial, the cord blood stem cells are much easier to obtain and are readily available. The cells are taken from umbilical cord blood and can be grown outside the body in a laboratory. Cord blood stem cells therapy has the potential to use stem cells to or replace organs in the body that are damaged from illness or disease. Scientists are already using cord stem cells in the treatment of many diseases. The list of potential areas of use is almost endless. The stem cells are in the very early stages of development and have the potential to turn into specialized cells such as liver cell, nerve cells or lung cells to name just a few. The scientific community is optimistically hopeful that these cells will be able to allow regeneration of organs in the human body. Researchers have already used the technique to grow limited versions of lungs, liver and other body organs in the lab. The potential for treatment is huge because of the large supply of cord stem cells that are available. This allows for increased research and development increasing the potential for finding cures more rapidly than ever thought possible. Even more promising, umbilical cord stem cells therapy is less prone to rejection than previous methods such as embryonic stem cell or bone marrow transplant. The cells in the umbilical cord are much less developed and therefore may not have taken on characteristics that the immune system would recognize and reject. New stem cell banks are now available to store a babys own stem cells for future use. Research has shown that stem cells from your own body may be the best way of using cord blood stem cells therapy. Parents can sign up for the program before the birth. The hospital will then collect the umbilical cord blood to the proper bank for processing. The bank will test the blood and place it in preservation containers. The stem cells are then frozen for potential future use. Cord blood stem cells therapy has an exciting future with many possibilities to provide people with advanced disease repair and treatment. While there is still much research to be done, the advancements are profound and important and will continue to proceed at a rapid pace. Author:

Finally, The Best Way To Burn Fat - Revealed
By Joseph Cole When it comes to losing weight, there are plenty of diet programs to choose from. However, whenever asked what the best way to burn fat is, the last thing I ever recommend is for the person to go on a diet. Diets are not the best way to burn fat, as most have a negative effect in the long run. Dieters often do not lose fat, but rather a combination of water, muscle tissue and some fat. As a result of this and the lack of nourishment from low-calorie diets, not only are they not the best way to burn fat but they are bad for your health too. In addition, when you sacrifice your muscle tissue as you often do when you go on a typical fad diet, your body starts to burn less calories, since muscle tissue require energy to maintain itself. This is anything but the best way to burn fat because it means youll find it easier than ever to gain fat when you stop dieting. Ever heard of yo-yo dieting? The best way to burn fat should prevent even the slightest chance of losing muscle tissue. The best way to burn fat should include lifestyle changes and involve building positive habits which contribute towards a healthy body. These changes should focus on speeding up your metabolism so your body uses up more calories, so that you can burn fat even while you rest, which is the best way to burn fat long-term. To do this, instead of drastically lowering calories, the best way to burn fat would involve spreading your meals out more often. Rather than eating 2-3 meals a day, have 4-6 small balanced meals. This trick is used all the time by bodybuilders to help them maintain a high metabolism and avoid fat gain, and the best way to burn fat should always include this. In fact, the best way to burn fat does not even have to involve counting calories, so long as you keep your portion sizes small, eating only until youre satisfied and not trying to fill yourself at every sitting, and you avoid sugar and unhealthy fats. Another tip to help burn fat is to drink green tea with every meal (or supplement with capsules). Studies prove that green tea leads to a reduction in body fat and can speed up your metabolism. My research also shows that the best way to burn fat always involves drinking green tea. The best way to burn fat fast should also involve performing regular fat-burning aerobic exercise. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to recommend a particular intensity, frequency or duration as these are dependent on your specific goals. Aside from directly burning calories, aerobic exercise also raises your metabolism and has countless health benefits too. Also, if you choose an exercise or sport that you enjoy you should have no trouble making regular aerobic exercise part of your normal routine. As mentioned, the best way to burn fat always involves lifestyle changes. Finally, the best way to burn fat should also include a strength training program such as weight lifting. Not to say you should aim to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger, rather the purpose of strengthening and building muscle should be for your metabolism to be permanently elevated so your body burns even more calories at rest. By doing so, you will reach your fat loss goals faster and not have to worry about burning muscle tissue. Why do 95% of dieters fail within one year? Why are fat burning pills a complete rip-off? Joseph Cole answers these questions and more in his revealing industry report "Weight Loss Scams, Myths and Cons Exposed". Get your

Are You Aware of Prescription Drug Side Effects
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_LeRoy] Scott LeRoy We tend to think of prescription drug side effects as mild, short-lived reactions to new medications that disappear as the body gets used to them. However, sometimes these drugs can cause very serious health problems, and in rare cases even death, so it's important to know all of the risks up front before you start taking any pharmaceutical drugs. Although they can be quite effective in treating a variety of ailments, and are in some cases a necessity, prescription drugs are man-made chemicals created in a laboratory. Much like with smoking, illegal drugs and other toxins, introducing unnatural substances to the body causes internal stress that can impede normal functioning. While a certain medication is addressing one health concern, it is actually interfering with dozens of other body processes, which is why there are so many different medical drug side effects. Anyone who has read a magazine or watched television has seen advertisements for drugs, be it for high cholesterol, depression, insomnia or impotence. These ads are always accompanied by a laundry list of potential side effects from these prescription drugs. That's because they wreak havoc on the body, and you must build up mechanisms to cope with this new stress. Headaches, stomach issues, restlessness, irritability and other concerns are quite common with a large percentage of these medications. Some can cause more serious medical drug side effects such as an irregular heart beat, sexual problems even strokes, heart attacks and in some cases death. Most of the more serious prescription drug side effects are rare, but they do occur, and even if it's 1 in 100,000, do you want to be that one? Some prescription drugs cause so much concern that they are recalled. An example of this is Vioxx, a very popular anti-inflammatory medication taken by millions of people. After a long struggle where the company denied any wrongdoing, the product was recalled due to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes with prolonged use. One of the biggest problems is that there are little to no long term studies on most of these prescription drugs. So the manufacturers and your doctors have no clue what the long term medical drug side effects will be. We can only hypothesize that years and years of man-made chemicals circulating around the human body will cause damage...to what extent is anybody's guess. Does this mean you should not take prescription medications? Absolutely not. For many health conditions they are a must, especially where the alternative is an unmanageable situation. You have to weigh the benefits and the drawbacks. But in some cases there are natural alternatives that you can try that may be just as effective as their prescription counterparts. And the best part is they don't have [http://www.herbal-supplements-guide.com/prescription-drug-side-effects.html] prescription drug side effects because they are comprised of natural substances such as vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts and other nutrients that they body can easily assimilate. Be a smart patient...make sure you learn about all of the potential side effects before taking any medication...it may save your life! He is a regular contributor to [http://www.herbal-supplements-guide.com/prescription-drug-side-effects.html] Prescription Drug Side Effects, a section of [http://www.herbal-supplements-guide.com] Herbal Supplements Guide dedicated to conventional and alternative treatments for losing weight. Breast Enlargement Surgery
By Eric Morris Breast enlargement is the third most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. Clinically known as augmentation mamoplasty, surgical breast implants have seen an increase of more than 20% over the past four years. Mostly, all breast surgery today is performed with saline filled implants that consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater. Saline filled implants are safe because the body absorbs the saline solution in case the implant ruptures or leaks. At present, the FDA does not approve silicone gel breast implants because they are not proven to be safe. Women looking for breast enlargement should have realistic expectation of the outcome. Though the implantation can improve an individuals appearance and self-esteem, the desire to match the looks of ones ideal wont necessarily materialize. The outcome will depend upon individual factors such as health, the chest structure and the shape of the body, the type of surgical procedure and the size of implant, prior breast surgery, and the skill and experience of the surgical team. Prior to the surgery, it is important to ascertain whether the American Board of Plastic Surgery certifies the surgeon. In addition to this, an individual should question the doctor regarding the risk or complications involved in breast augmentation, the size, shape and texture of implant, the contents of implant, the remedial measures if anything go wrong with the surgery, and the time of recovery. The plastic surgeon must also be informed about the individuals medical records. Any weight reduction program or future planning of pregnancy should be told to the surgeon because this can affect the long-term result of breast enlargement. A breast enlargement surgery takes 1-2 hours or more depending on the type of surgery and is usually done under local anesthesia. The implant is placed either under the breast tissue or the chest muscle beneath the breast. The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, but sometimes hospitalization may be necessary for some individuals. Complications may occur with this surgery. The common complications are breast pain, breast hardness and numbness in the nipples that may last for years. Some individuals may also develop an infection that may require the removal of the implants for several months until the infection clears. Implants may also occasionally leak, rupture, wrinkle, or change shape necessitating a second surgery to replace the damaged implants. Differences in shape and size of the breast after the surgery may also occur in some cases. While there is no scientific evidence that breast augmentation causes breast cancer, the presence of breast implants can make it technically difficult to detect breast cancer on a mammogram. Most women may have to go through remedial surgery depending upon their age. Individuals under the age of 18 are not permitted to undergo breast enlargement surgery. Breast Enlargement provides detailed information about breast enlargement, breast enlargement costs, breast enlargement creams, and more. Breast Enlargement is affiliated with Breast Enhancement Surgery. Gastric Bypass Surgery Is An Effective Weight Reduction Procedure
By Nicholas Bowen Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure that can help with weight loss. This procedure is very common and surgeons have successfully used this for helping patients reduce weight drastically. The success rate of gastric bypass is very high and this has come as a boon for all those who have problems dealing with the excess weight. Being overweight can hamper a person in leading a normal life. Well who would like to be hampered from doing their daily work smoothly? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has become all the more important in recent times then it was ever before. Losing weight can help in gaining that self confidence which was lost as they were acutely conscious of being overweight. One can get back their self-confidence and become successful in their personal and professional lives by undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Are you one of those individuals who are looking to lose their excess weight? Well the first thing that you must keep in mind regarding weight loss is that it can become a tough job for you if you do not make use of the proper methods. One will come across many products and services that claim to solve the problem of excess weight once and for all very quickly. One must not be taken in by the promises that are made by these weight loss procedures, but rather verify the claims made before the procedure or service is used for losing the excess weight. After all weight reduction is something which any person who is obese or overweight would like to undergo successfully. You must remember that not all people are perfect candidates for undergoing gastric bypass surgery and you must consult with your doctor to find out if you qualify for this surgery or not. The persons body weight must be at least a hundred pounds above the normal body weight. Anyone who is overweight and is suffering from life threatening obesity related medical conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes and hypertension are also ideal candidates for undergoing gastric bypass surgery for weight reduction. The age of the person must be above eighteen years and under sixty five years. The person must have been obese for about five years and must not be suffering from alcohol abuse. This surgical procedure can also be used on people who did not get favorable results after undergoing other weight reduction programs and procedures. Surgery is increasingly becoming common for people who are severely obese. Infact medical studies conducted in this direction show that the number of people who have successfully undergone this surgery for weight loss is quite high. The surgery aims to make the stomach smaller and allows the food to bypass certain parts of the small intestine. After this procedure is done the stomach of the obese person will fill in more quickly then it used to before this surgery. This reduces the amount of food which is taken and also reduces the amount of calories that are consumed by the person. This is a very effective weight loss mechanism. Nicholas Bowen is vastly experienced in weight loss procedures. He advises obese people about the best methods of reducing weight depending on their health and body condition. One of the reference sites he mentions regularly for information about weight loss surgery, gastric band, and gastric bypass surgery and stomach band techniques is www.gastricband.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Nicholas_Bowen http://EzineArticles.com/?Gastric-Bypass-Surgery-Is-An-Effective-Weight-Reduction-Procedure&id=554604 buy phentermine online without prescription

How Alkaline Water will Extend Life and Reduce the Onset of Adult Degenerative Disease
By Michele Michaels We get old and sick due to excess acid in our body. So, it follows if we reduce the acid and increase the alkaline levels we would be healthier and live longer. However, some doctors say that the stomach acid kills the alkalinity so; drinking alkaline water will do no good. Well what about that? What happens in the stomach when we drink high pH alkaline water? The stomach maintains the pH level at right around 4.0. The more alkaline water we drink the higher the stomach pH goes, sometimes it will rise above 4.5. When this happens the stomach will produce more hydrochloric acid to bring the stomach pH back down to below 4.0. Hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate is made from water, sodium chloride (table salt) and carbon dioxide. The sodium bicarbonate goes into the bloodstream and the hydrochloric acid goes into the stomach. The alkaline buffer in our blood is sodium bicarbonate, and it is the alkaline and acid buffers that are constantly monitoring the blood pH to maintain a constant blood pH of 7.365. When the blood becomes too alkaline, the acid buffer goes to work to bring the pH down; and when there is too much alkaline, then the alkaline buffer (sodium bicarbonate) goes to work to raise the pH level. From Sang Whang, inventor of Alkalife: Alkaline buffers are bicarbonate (HCO3-) mated with alkaline minerals. Examples of them are sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2) and magnesium bicarbonate (Mg(HCO3)2). Acid buffer is mainly carbonic acid (H2CO3), a water and carbon dioxide combination. Carbohydrate completely burnt becomes carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O); therefore there is no shortage of acid buffer. It was Lynda Frassetto, University of California, San Francisco, who discovered in 1966 that we lose the alkaline buffer bicarbonates in our blood as we age. The process seems to begin at age 45 and by 90 we have lost 18% of the bicarbonates in our blood. When the bicarbonates in our blood are reduced it impairs the bodys ability to neutralize and dump the acid our body produces. It is also at the age of around 45 that symptoms of diabetes, or osteoporosis and other diseases related to the aging process occur. When these acidic wastes are not released from the body and begin to build up, theses wastes take the form of fatty acid, sulfate, phosphate, uric acid, cholesterol, kidney stones, etc. It is only the waters pH value that helps the blood receive bicarbonates. It is the most important function of alkaline water since we lose these bicarbonates as we age. When we alkalize our body we increase the ability of our blood to neutralize the acid. Our world has changed from an organic, agricultural base to one that is industrial and toxic. And because of the greed of our industries a lot of these toxins have found their way into our air, water, food, and alas our bodies. The more pollution, the more stress the more acid. High protein diets and soft drinks also add to the acidity and this is why we lose bicarbonates in the blood as we age. This is taken from Sang Wang, The medical society considers the reduction of bicarbonates in the blood as an inevitable fact of aging. I argue that the reduction of bicarbonates in the blood is the cause of aging and diseases, not the result of aging. As long as we can replenish bicarbonates in the blood, we dont have to age! Now Enter Alkaline Water To Drink or Not to Drink Only when the stomach produces hydrochloric acid do bicarbonates enter the bloodstream. So it is best to drink the alkaline water on an empty stomach with the water having a pH level of 9.5 -10. The reason for this is the alkaline will raise the stomach pH relatively high and that will cause the stomach to produce more hydrochloric acid, allowing for more bicarbonates to enter the blood. (I carry a bottle of water with me everywhere I go and my bottle of Alkalife and just drink it all day long.) You can get the Alkalife from www.drclarkuniversity.org Click on books and products and then click on the University book store and then the link on the left Alkalife So, now you know how alkaline water will prevent the onset of adult degenerative diseases and aging in general. Michele Michaels has been active in raising awareness for alternative and natural methods of curing and treating all manner of illnesses. Finding Your Ideal Partner Online
By George Wood Meeting someone special online could be as thrilling an experience as meeting them in real. You just need to put in a little spice in your profile to attract the right man. Dont be too-quick-on-the-trigger sort to start discussing relationships at your first meeting. Be patient, start off by knowing each other first and then proceed by letting them know your desires and views on life and future. Here are some tips to help you find your soul-mate online. If youre looking for quick face-to-face dates, then you have to get their attention by writing them emails or leaving funny messages on their profiles. If they contact you back quickly, then you have made a successful step. For women, they should wait for the man to make the first move and ask you out. Be humble. If they suggest live meeting, offer to talk on phone first. Get to know each other by talking about simple facts of life and something about your childhood and the way you enjoy the most. To know a persons point of view about a live date, you have got to communicate more effectively without having them thinking negatively about your personality and intentions. Ask them whether they like to go out on weekends or they like staying at home. Ask about their opinions on online dating, speed dating and women who date more than one man at a time. This way you would be able to get some of their personal views that will let you decide whether you want to carry on with this relationship or end it here. After a few phone calls and email exchanges you will be able to tell how attracted you are to a guy you met online. If you think you share a lot and want to see your relationship flourishing, ask them straight-forwardly if they would like to go out. A woman can easily tell if a man is interested in her by his body language and the way he looks at her. Only after a couple of live dates you will sure be able to tell whether you have found your soul-mate or not. If you share the same thoughts, same feelings and want to talk to each other for hours at end, then you might want to end your search here and start thinking about having a family now! Not getting responses through online correspondence is sometimes discouraging and disappointing. But dont lose hope. Edit the online dating profile you have a little and be more open about your desires. Never hesitate to share your inner-most thoughts with anyone. If you think you need to change a few of your ways to get mens attention then do so. Always remember that relationships that tend to last long are the ones that are based on understanding, trust and mutual respect. Keeping this in mind, start a fresh search now and see how people respond to your openness and honesty. DatingShare.com is 100% free dating site and matchmaking service for singles. Plus provides free dating forum with dating tips and advices. Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #47
By Tami Close Im always so in awe of the synchronicity of things. When we let things happen as God intended and not try to put our energy on the outcome or how things are supposed to show up, we let the Universe do its wonderful job in providing all the things to move us forward with our mission here on earth. We then have signs that illustrate that everything is aligned as it should be. This past week I attended an Emmanuel Apostolic Church and what an experience I had. For several years now, I had felt a pull towards this church but didnt know why. I kept thinking I have to visit this church, but then never took the action steps toward attending it. Let me tell you about my experience. Upon arriving as a new person, I am greeted with such a warmth and love that it filled me with tears. I am then given a program and I notice the picture of the Eagle which is on the program. I asked the pastors wife if the Eagle is always on the cover of the program and she said, No, we change it every week. I open the program and it illustrates their celebration of Black History Month and the topic for that day was health. I said a little prayer to God thanking Him for guiding me here. What does all this mean? The Eagle is my guide and has a huge significance for me. Ive written about the Eagle in my book, Wake UpLive the Life You Love Finding Personal Freedom. Within the past week I was visiting a friend and there were two Eagles in their nest just outside her house. On the way home, I saw two Eagles flying within a few miles of each other. I then drive up my street and my neighbor had her binoculars out looking at the tree by our respective houses with an Eagle sitting in the nest. Incredible, right? As I listened to the speakers at the church, there was no doubt in my mind why I was there. The speakers discussed health and the illnesses that plague African Americans disproportionately as compared to other ethnic groups. The statistics they quoted were quite alarming. They mentioned heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The speakers told the congregation that lifestyle changes are necessary in order to become intentional in creating vibrant health. You can imagine how I was feeling at this time and why I was there. For years, Ive visualized me speaking to the masses about health. Here was an opportunity to help this group overcome their adverse statistics and paint a different picture for them. I like the phrase, Go BIG, or go home! I did meet with the pastor and told him my intent and how I was going to help his congregation. He looked at me in awe when I presented him with this information as he mentioned that prior to our meeting he spoke with three of his parishioners expressing the need for better nutrition and health. Synchronicity? Absolutely! Do I know all the details of how this is going to be accomplished? No, I dont. I just know that Im supposed to do it and the resources and the people will show up. I know it! What does this mean for you? You have a mission to complete on this earth. When you are out of balance with your health, youre so focused on not feeling good that it distracts you from your God-given assignment. You must become intentional about your health. I remember what I wrote down years ago after reading Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfields book, Dare to Win. In this book, you are asked to write down your objective in life and heres what I wrote: My purpose in life is to empower all people to teach them about health issues to realize they are responsible for their own well-being. I wrote this down after I had gotten myself well from an illness where I was bedridden. I went through that experience so I would understand what it feels like to have poor health and then to align myself with everything that was going to help me get well. Then years later I gained weight and lost it using all the components of my weight loss program, including the products from Isagenix. Poor health and being overweight is not where God intends us to be. Let me help guide you to better health. It is possible to feel enthusiasm for life. Think of me as your sign that is showing up for you. What would it feel like to have support to help you and to know youre not alone? Remember what Oprah says, We dont do anything by ourselves. We must have support in order to succeed. Love and hugs, Helping you fall in love...with yourself

Reinforcing A Large Panel
By David Gomm We recommend that windows which exceed 3' by 4' in size be reinforced to prevent breakage. If a window is 3' by 3', it might not need to be reinforced, that's usually a judgment call based on where it is to be installed. Go to http://www.betterstainedglass.com/Newsletter/Archives/2006Aug-reinforcinglargepanel/aug2006reinforce.htm to see the photos that go with this article. In the old days, when a panel was large and needed to be reinforced, artists actually installed big pieces of rebar, no kidding rebar, in window frames and wired the stained glass to the rebar. This was an effective method of reinforcement, but it was far from attractive. Now, I'm not complaining, but doesn't the art of stained glass have enough restrictions already? Are you telling me that I'm going to have to work my beautiful design around chunks of concrete reinforcement? Fortunately there's something fairly new on the scene to help in that area. The secret? A thin strip of copper which is thin enough to fit between existing lead lines. You solder them in place and you've got a substantially stronger panel. How can that be? It's so thin and floppy? See how easily it bends.
That's part of what's so cool about this strip of copper, it bends easily in one direction, allowing us to follow the most meandering lead lines, but it's fairly rigid in the other direction, adding strength to the glass. Before this new copper strip was available, we used to go to a sheet metal shop and have them cut 1/4" wide strips of thin gauge copper on the shear. Then we had to bend it to follow our lead lines using needle nosed pliers. It was fairly complex and when done, you still had a piece of copper that stood 1/4" above the surface of the window. It sometimes cast a shadow on the panel and soldering the back was a challenge as well. When reinforcing a window (using this or any other method) it is important to remember that the reinforcement must run from one side of the window to the other to do any good. If a piece of copper is run to the middle and then it just stops, you will actually be creating a place where more stress will be applied to that spot and the window could break there. The copper strip comes in a roll and will cover a lot of glass. The idea is to run the copper back and forth along lead lines so the glass will have more strength than it did before, and will transfer the stresses on it to it's outer edge where it is stronger since it's installed in some sort of rugged framework. This will prevent the glass from getting cracks either from being pushed on, or from the weight of the glass being pulled down by gravity over time and sagging. This panel is so large that we need to reinforce it a great deal. I begin by running strips up and down the length of the window. I used some spray cans which were handy to weight the strip down in between the glass. Make sure if you use this method to remove cans before soldering because heat and pressurized cans can be hazardous. At places where the copper strip intersects another piece of copper, I have to cut the new piece so I can continue on across the panel. I bend a little "L" on the end so the copper won't slide as I install it. Then I gently press it in between the glass, the foil and the other copper strips. I use something to weight it down, or it will pop out from between the glass. I then string the copper out to the edge of the panel. When doing this, I keep the roll of copper in the bag it came in and gently pull it out as I need it. I use care not to let it tangle or slip out of the bag so that I don't have to relive the disaster with my "Slinky" when I was a kid. I use tin snips to cut the copper, about 1/4" from the edge of the glass. With all the reinforcement strips in place, I begin to tack the glass together. I make sure that the glass is pushed into the right place (on pattern), the copper has a tendency to push things around. Arrows point to all the places where copper has been installed to properly reinforce this panel. After soldering the panel, I need to clean up the areas where copper extends beyond the edges. Using the tip of my soldering iron, I push the copper strip over the edge, which bends it. Holding the strip in place with needle nosed pliers, I solder the copper against the edge of the foil. When it's done, you can't even tell that the window has been reinforced. Since this panel is being installed in a door, once it's soldered, it gets sent out to be encased in tempered glass and insulated. The tempered glass adds an additional amount of strength to the panel. David Gomm started building stained glass windows professionally back in 1983 and has become an expert at many aspects of stained glass building, design and repair. He writes a monthly newsletter at his http://www.betterstainedglass.com website. Modern Pressure Cooker
By Alan Ross Cookers are no more simple cooking utensils of the yesteryear where there was not an iota of safety element built-in. Cookers have come a long way since the World War II and in addition to having countless safety features, they are also aesthetical and eye pleasing plus user friendly, not to mention their functionality and utility. Before we proceed, cooker also means the name of a software product called as Mandriva Linux which is naturally out of the scope of this discussion. Ever since man discovered cooking was delicious than eating raw, cookers began commanding kitchens across the globe. Modern cookers come in a huge variety of designs and safety features. Still others like the solar variety sport the smart tag of not consuming any power at all. Features
Pressure cookers have features characteristic of their categories. Rice cookers have single inside containers while normal cookers comes with multi deck containers. Another distinguishing feature of rice cookers is relatively thinner construction. Cookers provide pressurized (10Ksc) cooking which helps cook 30-50% faster. Cooking under sealed condition, as dictated by high pressures, has dual advantages. One: Faster cooking saves time and energy; two: prevents loss of nutrients. Safety Features
Pressure cookers build up to 10ksc of pressure in quick time. This asks for fail proof safety features. A release valve lifts off just before the threshold pressure is reached regulating the inside pressure. The gasket in the lid expands and comes out of a recess in the lid when the release valve fails to operate or reduce pressure even after operating. Of course, the gasket has to be replaced later. Another important safety feature is the blow off safety valve. This operates only when both the above fail. This is directly fitted to the top of the lid and is made of a special alloy of aluminum which melts exactly at the threshold pressure. The body is made of extra strong aluminum of thickness 5mm. The bottom is 10mm thick in some models. The lids are designed to fit either from inside or outside depending on the design. Inside lids are safer than the other design as their entire rim grips the mouth better under pressure. The electric variety cookers have thermostats which switch off at a particular temperature preventing higher pressure buildup. Solar cookers need time before they got a place under the Sun owing to their dilute energy output. So anyone still fancies flint and stone to cook dinners? Organic Composting
By Davinos Greeno Making compost will help you reduce pollution and cut down that landfill! Your plants will grow healthier and look happier for it and it will save you money on fertilisers too. Our local council in Manchester has now given us brown bins for us to add leaves, grass and other compost matter into, which is then emptied every two weeks once it has reduced to less than half its size.
What is compost? Garden guides often describe composting as natures way of recycling. Composting is indeed a natural way of recycling, harnessing natural processes rather than machinery and man-made chemicals, but it takes people to do it.
Soil maintenance is at the heart of organic growing: dont feed the plants, feed the soil -- the plants will look after themselves. The extremely complex subject of soil maintenance can happily be summed up in one word: composting.
A smelly hole at the far end of the garden filled with putrefying kitchen wastes and flies buzzing round. Thats what compost isnt. No stinks, no flies, though kitchen waste is welcome.
Compost is not just decayed organic matter. Composting is applied microbiology at its most complex, involving the interactions of thousands upon thousands of different species of micro organisms in a highly complex ecosystem.
What can I compost?
If it can rot it will compost, but some items are best avoided. Some things, like grass mowings and soft young weeds, rot quickly. They work as activators or hotter rotters, getting the composting started, but on their own will decay to a smelly mess. Recycle your plant-based, kitchen and garden waste by making it into compost
Older and tougher plant material is slower to rot but gives body to the finished compost - and usually makes up the bulk of a compost heap. Woody items decay very slowly; they are best chopped or shredded first, where appropriate.
A container or brown bin is not an absolute necessity as you can make perfectly good compost in a free standing heap as long as it is large enough. You will see later why this may be a drawback. Assuming then that we need to make a container we are faced with many choices.
Why not make or buy a compost bin? Theyre usually cheap to buy, and are available in wood or recycled plastic (that might otherwise be in your local landfill site). If youre keen you could combine it with a wormery or use a shredder which increases the amount of compostable waste. Do not compost foods such as dairy produce, meat, bread etc as these attract flies and vermin. How do I know when its done? That depends. What was a pile of plant material will gradually, from the bottom up, turn into a pile of dark stuff that looks like brown dirt. Eventually, none of the items you put in there will be recognizable. If youre using it out in the garden, a few small recognizable bits wont hurt - theyll finish composting in the garden. If youre using it for houseplants or to start seeds, its better to wait until its well finished so you dont have microbes attacking the fine rootlets of new plants. Dig it in to have a healthy, fertile garden and your fruit and vegetables can be organic. Dont assume the waste is harmless and bin it. Putting it in landfill costs money and it will produce methane (a global warming gas); also it may pollute the groundwater. Compost waste often comprises about 20-30% of your total household waste and the impact on recycling is significant. Looking for more Gardening Articles? Don't Turn Your Back on Uncle Jon
By Steve Robbins Last week, Uncle Jon took me to one of his favorite East Texas fishing spots. Its a beautiful small lake near Hawkins, Texas. We've been there before and I expected nothing out of the ordinary. As usual, we took the kayaks as this is a perfect kayaking lake. After we arrived, we unloaded the boats and gear. We rigged up and placed all of our stuff in the kayaks. Jon had a good idea... or so he thought. Being a great host, he was concerned with my well being... or so I thought. You know... big ol' boys like me have a tough time sitting on something that's only 6 inches off the ground. I mean... to maintain any dignity at all during that process is no easy chore. Anyway, the rear half of my kayak was in the water while the front rested on the bank. Jon told me to go ahead and get in the boat and he would push the kayak out into the water. Well... it sounded like a good idea at the time. So, without getting wet, I climbed into the boat. I positioned myself in the seat and got as comfortable as I could. Jon asked, "You ready?" I said, "Yep... lets go." Jon grabbed the nose of the kayak, slightly lifted it, and began to push it backwards out into the lake. You have to remember here... I'm a pretty big ol' boy. My weight, and Jon's lifting of the kayak's nose, caused the bottom of the boat at the rear to contact the lake's bottom. OK... remember when you were kid and someone told you to push that wheelbarrow with a load of wet cement? Ok... picture that in your mind. And picture this... Jon was holding the nose of the kayak (the wheelbarrow handles)... the back end was resting on the bottom (the wheelbarrow tire)... and I was the load of cement teetering at the mercy of Jon's grip and the fish gods. You know... it doesn't take very much tilt to cause that full wheelbarrow to start to turn over... and it takes someone with strength and the right amount of leverage to keep it upright. Well, at this point, Jon had neither. You know what happened next. I started tilting to the right. The mass was moving. I saw Jon tighten his grip but he had no leverage. I saw his eyes start to bulge. I kept tilting to the right. At this point, I didn't think this scenario was going to end pleasantly. Jon was struggling. I was rooting for him. Within that split second, I was thinking, "come Jon, hold on." You know, its a strange feeling when you reach the point to where you know you're going in. Its almost like slow motion. You think things like; I hope the water is not too cold, I hope its not too deep and I hope my insurance is paid up. Well, I hit the water and immediately submerged. Of course, the kayak immediately popped right back upright as Jon released his grip. I grabbed firm footing and proceeded to stand up in the belly button deep water. The bottom had a slick and steep incline at this point and I slipped and was again submerged. Eventually, in what seemed like an awful long time and a good bit of thrashing, I stood up and walked slowly out of the water. My fly line and leader were tangled all about my feet. All dignity was lost. Jon apologized and was probably sincere. I'm sure you know that look on someone's face when they need to laugh out load but are doing their dead level best to look serious. That was Jon. We eventually reloaded the boat and approached the launch at a totally different angle. I had a good day of fishing. My mind often wandered back that moment as the water dripped off the brim of my hat. I couldn't help but wonder why Uncle Jon did that to me. Did he want to catch the first fish? Heck, all he had to do was say so. I would have gladly watched from the bank.
