The results of their research provide useful guidance for anyone considering an online program. The findings of their research are summarized here:
Best for motivated, self-directed students who have a definite goal. The Stanford survey confirms that the best students are those that dont need constant attention and guidance, and most importantly, have a clear goal for their educational degree.
Online learning attracts students who would not otherwise have taken courses.The survey shows that it is definitely an either-or situation for many students many dont take classes at all unless they are offered online.
Need for recognition and achievement.Stanford has found that the most effective students for online programs like to compete for high marks online and eventually earn a degree that is delivered to them anywhere in the world.
High need for autonomy. Stanfords results show that any student who prizes their autonomy over being overly socially involved excels at online learning programs.
Ability to commit up to 10 hours a week to the course. Stanfords study show that the best students dont necessarily put in the longest hours; they are the ones that make the most of the hours they commit. The minimum amount of time Stanford found students could spend per week on entry-level courses was 4 hours per week; for graduate-level courses, 15 hours or more.
Confidence in sharing their own experiences. Many of the respondents to the Stanford said that the best classes were marked by other students sharing their own experiences. The willingness to share experiences makes for the best online classes, and this is substantiated by the Stanford study.
Like to write. Stanford found this as a definite requirement, but critical to the success of anyone in an online program. Writing is the primary means by which students interaction with each other and their instructors is achieved, so this is also important to keep in mind.
Bottom Line: The Stanford survey shows that the more independent and focused a student is, the more successful they will be in distance learning programs. Gradual Change of the Weight Watchers Diet

By Luke Sanger As we all know by now, Weight Watchers is based on a points system and that point system basically runs the diet and everything in the diet is based on this point system. There are a few variations of the POINTS system but there isnt much of a difference at all. The main differences are based on how the dieter looks at fiber and how much fiber they want to eat. If the dieter uses fiber as a point enhancer(reducer) then they would substitute the 50 pt. value in the Weight Watchers Formula for a 70 pt. base value. Other variations are that the POINTSfinder manual calculator that is handed out in Weight Watcher meetings does not reach a points value of 2 until after 70 calories have been reached, rather than 50 as the formula states. This makes the point values 20 pts. higher than first thought. As time has progressed, so has the Weight Watchers diet. Recently the diet has started to take into consideration how much people want to exercise and how that affects the point system in a whole new way. Certain exercises are given certain negative point values to offset eating some foods that might not have been allowed in earlier variations of the diet. The Core Plan When the Atkins Diet and the South Beach diet became more and more popular, Weight Watchers had to come up with a different variation to compete with these diets to be able to keep their dieters happy and feeling like they were still using a diet that was modern and up to day. So, the Core Plan was invented to mirror the Atkins and South Beach diets respectively. In essence, the Core Plan eliminates certain foods all together and focuses on core foods that they should eat until satisfied but not full. These core foods are basically deemed healthy foods from all food groups. Still staying with the points system, dieters are allowed 35 pts. a week to eat non-core foods. The Flex Plan This is yet another variation that was touched on above that includes exercise into the Weight Watchers equation. A set number of points are given for a given day based on the dieters current weight. Then, the number of points could be increased when the dieter would exercise. This is a reference to the clever title flex which allows the dieter more points that are not based on their weight that they could use each week, but are not required to use. TurnAround This program was adopted in late 2004 and incorporates all the above plans into one big plan, and was created to help a person maintain a healthy lifestyle beyond just eating foods with points assessed to them. Ten Tips for Coping with People Who Go Silent

By Rachel Green 1. Prevent silence by developing a safe environment: Silence can occur when a person does not feel it is safe to speak out. Create an environment that invites participation and in which people feel comfortable to talk. An environment where people can talk, be listened to and understood - free of judgement, accusation, blame, belittling, derision or sarcasm. This may reduce the times they need to go silent. 2. Prevent silence by LISTENING and not jumping in: Pause before responding and then respond by feeding back what you have understood. Listen rather than offering advice, solving the problem for them, intellectualising, ridiculing, disagreeing, pacifying, relating similar stories ... and so on. Simply be there with them. This will make it feel safer so silence is not necessary. 3. When you are getting along talk about what happens: When you are getting along talk about the silences that occur. Work out two strategies. Firstly, what you can do to help to stop silence from happening and secondly, ways that help dissolve silence when it does happen. 4. When someone is silent gently comment on what you've noticed: Gently mention the silence. Without judgement or complaint comment on what you've noticed. For example, "I've noticed you are quiet at the moment, how are you feeling?" rather than a challenging question, "So what's wrong with you?" 5. Ask: "how can I help", or "what do you need?" Don't assume you know what silent people need, ask them. Ask the person how you can help or what he or she needs. For example, don't automatically assume they want an arm around their shoulders, or a cup of tea or to talk about it. Don't give advice or solve their problems unless you know that is what they want. 6. Provide options of 3 possibilities: Provide different options of help. "Would you like me to leave you in peace, bring you a cup of tea or give you a hug?" This is different from saying, "Here have a cup of tea". Don't trap them into accepting something. Gentle suggestions can help them to respond. 7. If the person says something, ACCEPT it: Accept what the person says. Don't judge. Don't tell them what to do. Don't tell them to stop feeling like that. Don't tell them they need to change. Don't fire questions at them and don't argue. For example, if they say, "I'm so worried about Billy" say, "so Billy being sick is getting you down?" or "Billy being sick is worrying". This is instead of more judgemental responses, such as, "You know he is going to be alright", "Silly thing", "You should go and ask the Doctor how he is", "Oh, is that all", or "Why on earth are you worried about him?" 8. Go Slowly: Go slowly and gently. Allow quiet between you, pause before responding, reflect. Go closer in stages, not all at once. 9. Speak Gently: Speak with a softened, pleasant tone of voice, and a clear voice, with an easy rate of speech. Don't speak in a harsh, tense, whiny or fast way. Sound quiet, calm and patient. 10. Don't push for a response: Don't hound them for an explanation; if you do they may retreat even more. Be sympathetic. In a kindly, understanding, easy way be on their side and be interested in what is going on. Demonstrate an attitude of wanting to listen to them. Put aside your own issues for now. Next, put down the items of all types that must (or it would be best if completed) get done during the upcoming week. Now, for each task, you need to rank it using the letters A, B, and C. To do this ranking A = important and must be done by a lawyer; B = less important and does not require a lawyer (although you personally might have to do it); C = not very important and does not require a lawyer (although you personally might have to do it). Next, among the As, rank each item with either a 1, 2, or 3. The items marked with a 1 must be done within two days. The items marked with a 2 must be done in three to five days, and the items marked with a 3 can wait until next week if necessary. Do the same with the Bs and Cs. For example, if you have some attorney marketing task that needs to be done by Monday, then you would mark it an A1. If you have a client that needs specific information from their file by Friday, you would probably mark it a B2 and delegate that to a paralegal. If you have an appointment with the doctor on Friday it would be a C3 since it does not require a lawyer but you need to do it although you could reschedule it if necessary. Delegating Tasks Delegate any tasks that are B or C level of importance if you possibly can. If you cant delegate it ask yourself why? No staff? Not enough staff? Not trained the staff? Staff not effective? Fix these issues so you can delegate. Create a form to use that you can give to each team member. Include the following information for each task:
Todays date Due date for task What is to be done Who is responsible for this task Why the task is important How often to report to you on progress or status Further instructions
The goal here is to stop doing as many B and C tasks as you possibly can. You make your money doing things lawyers do (associate, partner and managing partner lawyer things) not other things. Does The Good Outweigh The Evil?

First was creation of Adam to oversee the garden. The Consequence being the experience of loneliness; this brought about the, creation of a female companion from the rib of the man, whose roll was to be a helpmate. The second, the answer to the question, which species would dominate? Eve eating the Apple After Adam awakens to find this lovely helpmate, he is soon disillusioned by her eating the one piece of fruit they were forbidden to eat, an apple from the tree of good and evil. Then, she entices him to do like wise. Now one can and should ask what the good was and what was the evil or consequence of this action. At first glance, we are horrified. How could these chosen ones indulge in such a despicable action knowing full well the consequences? Yet, there they were aware naked an afraid trying to hide from their creator. But when one examines it from the human factor, not the spiritual factor, good can be attributed to this factor. The obvious one our ability to thinks and our free will or ability to choose. So, might we not conclude, as every action has an equal or better reaction, that for every evil attributed to an act there is at least one good thing or more attributed to it? And more often then not, and at least under certain circumstances, the good far outweighs the evil? Teenage Gambling At Post Prom High School Party

By Howard Keith The latest trend to hit high schools is supervised teenage gambling at the Post Prom School Party. Over the past few months I have received numerous emails from parents, students and school faculty expressing concern about the new alternative entertainment. In all cases these people believe it would do more harm then good. The concept became reality for students once the Post Prom Committee voted to accept this new alternative entertainment.
This Post Prom Committee believes this is safe night party for the High School prom. The students who are taking part are between the ages of sixteen and eighteen years old. Each student is able to purchase fake money to gamble with and at the end of the night they can trade this money in for prizes with at the end of the night. Some parents believe this is a safe wonderful event for their children. While others believe this is one area they prefer their kids not be involved with. One of the emails I received was from a family who home schools their five children. I was surprised since their kids were not involved. She had explained to me that her daughter who is seventeen has friends who attend the public school system. She went on to tell me the negative behavior exhibited by these teens after the event took place. In fact they taught her daughter how to play black jack and poker. This is a good neighborhood that has strong community ties. She also informed me that she not see the difference between using fake money or real money when you still have a chance to win a prize that has value. She believes these teens are being educated on how to gamble, win and take the easy way out. People in favor of this gambling event, nicely told those who were against it to have their teenagers stay home. It was my understanding the post prom parties were supposed to be for everyone. It surprised me that a school district finds gambling night an acceptable behavior for our teenagers. I have seen first hand the self destruction gambling can do to teenagers and adults. Its my belief that gambling should be limited to people who are eighteen and over. Another email was asking me for the specific statistics on the negative impact on a teenagers who attend a gambling event. General statistics reflect a percentage of those in attendance will develop a compulsive gambling addiction. Some of these same students may become addicted at some point in their life. I have found that addictions to gambling are not age sensitive. People of any age who are gambling for the very first time can develop a gambling addiction. Usually a friend or family member takes them to the gambling establishment. I first found it difficult to understand how a person who is sixty five retired and on a fixed income gets addicted to gambling. The seniors I spoke with were very upset and didnt understand how this happened to them. The unfortunate part is they lost their pensions and now only have their Social Security to live on. In one case the Grandmother has to move in with her daughter. There is very little difference between supervised gambling and allowing supervised drinking alcoholic beverages or serving the students there choice of dugs on a silver platter. If a Principal served a student an alcoholic drink he would be arrested. I am trying to understand how school educators and parents can distinguish between alcohol and gambling on school property. How is one more acceptable then the other? Studies have shown that there is a correlation between alcohol addiction and gambling addiction. The correlation was based on individuals who attend both Gamblers Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. It would be a shame to find out ten years from now that students who took part in supervised gambling at the High School level their future was compromised by a life of self destruction and low self esteem. Its a proven statistics that students who gamble get a similar rush as if they just had an alcoholic beverage. The only difference here they will not wake up with a hang over and the side effects are minimal until its too late. We have now given our students another option in life. The major concern is the students will probably like the rush from gambling a lot more then alcohol and or drugs since there is no hang over or smell. Some students are likely to continue gambling. Students with A grades are not exempt from this. Statistics show that compulsive teenage gamblers are also very bright and articulate individuals. People need to be educated on teenage gambling and its long term affects. Its illegal to gamble if you are under 18. Its also illegal to drink if you are under 18 (some places 21) and its illegal to smoke cigarettes if you are under 18. These laws were set for a reason. Another email I received wanted to know do these school systems have any respect for the Law? I emailed each of the people and asked why havent they raised their concerns to the school board? They all responded the same. We are the minority and now we look bad in front of our kids. This is truly a no win situation. The parents who are against this sort of entertainment believe; if just one student develops a compulsive gambling addiction that is one too many. Clothes Make The Date

By Bernadette Sukley Going on a date is like an interview. You want to look self assured but you dont want to look too needy. So, ask yourself: Where am I going? For a few drinks? To a fancy restaurant? To the movies? Miniature golfing? If she says dont dress updont. Causal means casual, not cautiously overdressed. Weathers the thing. Spring and fall are tough to call. Wear a sweater and youre likely to be sweating before the dates begun. You have a mobile closetits called your car. Toss a few items in the back (not the trunk) in case you need to change the outfit with the weather. Dont wear a tie unless you are meeting your date directly from work or the sitch calls for one. Subtle patterns in pastels are eye-catching, bold lines and geometric shapes can put off the beholder. And ladies, dont wear too high heels. Nerves + high heels = fall. Do entice, dont overpower. Cologne or perfume can initiate all kinds of reactions. If its overpowering the reaction may be sudden (read: asthma attack). Fragrances linger a little better on clothing than skin. One or two short spritzes are all you need. Tight clothes. A big no-no. Fashion-wise or socially tight clothing tends to bring out figure flaws on guys and gals rather than covering them up. Even super models would look less appealing in too tight pants. Bling. Surebut dont over do it. Its easier (and less time consuming) to match a few pieces than worry if the turquoise beads clash with the fuchsia cloisonn and the pearls. Dont hide piercings. If youve got one or two keep your studs indates arent about hiding, but showing the other person the real you. Jeans. The ideal date default dress. You can get away with jeans any where (except a fancy restaurant). Just make sure that they fit well and arent wrinkly. You can dress them up with a jacketgreat look for guys. Silk chemise and jeans are good datewear for ladies. Hair. The eternal question for women: up or down? If its short ignore this tip. But women should look in a mirror and decide if they want to elongate the face. Hair thats down to your shoulders will automatically do that. But if you feel your face is too long, put your hair up. For men and women: Getting your hair cut on the day of a big date is dicey. If its been a long time since your hair saw scissors, a new cut might be a good thing. Law of Attraction for Weight Loss: Your Secret to Dropping Unwanted Weight Once and for All!

Youve heard phrases that intuitively reflect this understanding: you reap what you sow, birds of a feather flock together, etc. What does this have to do with weight loss? Everything, my friend. This law is actually responsible for your original weight gain and everything else in your life, believe it or not. Its time to understand this principle in order to get what you want, instead of what you dont want! Heres a quick example to give you a feel for how it works. At 59 and 135 pounds for most of my life, I considered myself naturally lean. Although my European aunts regularly told me my day would come, I thought I would be thin for life. When I joined the corporate world, however, things did change. I noticed women in the office bonding over weight issues. They advised each other on fat grams in each others lunches, they swapped low fat recipes, shopped together for outfits that smartly concealed extra pounds, and shared exercise tips. As a naturally lean person who could eat whatever she wanted (and did so regularly), I was soon on the outs with this crowd. All I wanted to do was fit in, so I quickly followed suit and joined their misery. I began complaining about sneaky extra pounds, and appearing cellulite. I swore off fat-packed foods and joined them in break time snacks of carrots and celery sticks. At first it was an act. I was thin and I knew it; I just wanted to fit in. Strangely enough, though, I began to notice that clothes were getting tighter, and thighs getting jigglier. My complaints became much more authentic and alarming as time went on. Soon enough, I was carrying the extra pounds that every woman in the office complained of. This was the law of attraction in action! My thoughts attracted circumstances that matched. Because I talked about being overweight, acted overweight, and commiserated with overweight women, I soon enough found myself overweight. At the time, I just assumed my wise old aunts were right. My time had indeed come. Several years later after unsuccessful diets and exercise programs, I discovered the Law of Attraction. I then understood that my thoughts and actions created my problem and that new thoughts and actions could create the thin thighs and flat stomach I deserved. So I began thinking thin, and doing things I thought a lean person would do. I talked to myself and supportive friends like a perfect-weight person would (required imagination, I assure you). And I gradually curbed habits of critiquing my body and feeling hopeless about changing it. And lo and behold - in less time than you would believe -- there were my thin thighs and flat stomach waiting for me. Law of Attraction, folks. Its magic! Now I will say the Law of Attraction works in accordance with your beliefs. (Beliefs being nothing more than oft-repeated thoughts.) So if you believe it takes blood, sweat and tears to drop weight then thats what youll have to experience unless you change those beliefs. On the other hand, if you can realign your beliefs for an easier experience, you can skip the baloney were regularly fed about good fat/bad fat, red light/green light carbs, required aerobic & weight sessions, etc. There are plenty of women out there, though, who would happily suffer through those rules if it would just get them where they want to be! If only they knew the key isnt food or exercise; its thoughts and feelings. Its the energy that creates the reality. Tell your body what to expect, through aligned thoughts and feelings, and let it happen. It will soon be your reality, regardless of what your European aunts and overweight colleagues say!
