How To Prepare For Spring Lawn Maintenance

By Steve Hoogenakker YOUR LANDSCAPE WHAT YOU DONT KNOW COULD KILL MILLIONS Thats right. As a homeowner, youre responsible for millions of living organisms. Youre the Jack Bauer of the show 24 protecting millions of innocent lives! Grass plants, ornamentals, trees, annual flowers and shrubs. Your decisions also affect insect and biotic populations. Most importantly, youre in control of how your landscape affects you and your family personally. The best way to make the most of your living investment is knowledge and of course, action! Lets get started!
Da Lawn
Well start with the lawn. Its very important to have a thick, healthy lawn. Why? My daughter plays soccer and I shudder everytime she gets knocked down. (I never cheer when she knocks someone else down.) When kids play on your lawn, or when elderly residents walk in it, a thick lawn protects their skin and joints. A thick lawn also prevents weeds from coming up, reducing the need for pesticides. So, what can we do in the spring to get there? First, write down your thoughts about last years turf. What improvements would you like to have seen? Then spring into action. If you have a lawn contractor, discuss fertilization options with him/her. Are they applying 2-3 pounds of Nitrogen per year? Nitrogen has a direct relationship to the color of the lawn. If the lawn isnt thick and green, ask them to do a soil test, or you can do one using the easy instuctions on the website. (Cost $15.00 plus postage) Do they use slow release or fast release fertilizer? Quick release fertilizers give the lawn a quick greenup and are cheaper, but they lose their color after 2-4 weeks. If youre getting 3 applications per year, with normal release fert, you get 4 weeks of food and rapid growth followed by 4 weeks of partial starvation. Using slow release feeds gradually, and keeps the lawn growing at a more regular pace. Ask your contractor if he likes double cutting and bagging grass clippings, if he says yes, I might give you a $5.00 gift certificate to Caribou Coffee. When he says no, tell him that using slow release will cut down on rapid flush growth, and cut down the need for a lot of extra labor. Everybody wins! There is bound to be some winter salt or plow damage too. These areas need to be seeded or sodded right away. I recommend bringing black dirt in if needed and if using seed, use blends, such as kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye for sunny areas, and fine fescue, perennial rye and bluegrass for shady areas. If seeding, expect weeds. Crabgrass control cant be applied to these areas unless you use Siduron (Tupersan), but broadleaf controls can be used after the seeded area is mowed twice. Seed or Sod, water a couple of times per day for short periods of time. Da Shrubs
Shrubs need little care in the spring, but make sure that the leaves left over the winter are removed. If you had roses in your own garden, and did the Minnesota Tip , make sure the leaves and covering are removed so the plants dont heat up under their protection.
Clear any areas where bulbs mightve been planted. Da Garden
If you have a personal garden, tis the season to till it up. Consider doing a soil test yourself for best results. Heres a little secret: Why does Miracle Grow grow 700 pound pumpkins? I know you dont actually want a 700 pound pumpkin this fall, but if you want to give your garden every chance of providing pleasure or juicy tomatoes, then the secret is this: Most fertilizers carry 3 ingredients. Even if you ask the U of M, theyll say. Buy a 10-10-10! This is the standard response for anyone in the industry, and it usually works Ok. BUT, there are 16 minerals needed for every plant to survive. Miracle Grow provides all 16! They might not be needed, but if just 1 or 2 are missing or weak your plants will suffer. Da Trees
Make sure that the tree wrap is removed from trees, look for split trunks or damage that mightve happened from the early snow storm or from wind damage. If you know you have Ash Trees, which almost everyone has, there is a terrible menace out there this year. The Emerald Ash Borer. Once its on a property, can kill all the ash trees on a property in 1-3 years. There are links on www.Townhome.Pro. Da Water
Irrigation system startups need to include replacing broken heads, and resetting the direction of heads so they cover the lawn, making sure they dont blow over the freshly washed car and into the bedroom window. If you dont have a system, I would be happy to recommend a professional, or design one myself.. Finally, work with your contractor. Its in his/her best interest to have a wonderful, living landscape too. If your association does a lot of work itself, or if youre just curious, call or write a Master Gardener volunteer. Its free, and the link is on your website that is just being created; www.Townhome.Pro. Think Thoroughly About Having Weight Loss Surgery

By David Wasp If you are thinking about having weight loss surgery do so thoroughly. You may be anxious to get the surgery over and done with but it is a major change and your life will not be the same afterwards. This goes for it the weight loss surgery is successful in helping you lose weight and if it isnt, because your body will be different inside, whether or not the outside changes. Of course this sounds a little negative. The surgery does help a great number of people to change their habits and lose a lot of weight. This can be beneficial in a number of ways, feeling better, more active, living longer, perhaps youll even notice a loss of certain medical problems that were exacerbated by being obese. Many have found that they dont even make it through the pre-qualification process. There can be many reasons and by no means indicate that you can never lose the weight, in fact it often indicates that you have other alternatives to weight loss surgery that you can try to help you lose weight. Its possible that youve only been obese for a few years, which means that this isnt a long term chronic problem and you should try healthy diets and exercise to see if the weight comes back off. You may have an untreated mental condition, such as depression or alcoholism. This can exacerbate your weight problems and by getting them treated you find that its easier to lose weight. Or you may still be under eighteen or over sixty-five. This is simply an age limit that doctors follow to help prevent unnecessary risks to the patients. Weight loss surgery is really seen as a last alternative to weight loss because it is a drastic step with serious implications if a complication occurs. But it is also a very effective means of weight loss with many success stories as a testiment to its effectiveness. Just How Do You Choose The Right Diet?

By Phil Rather Chances are that eventually you will find yourself mulling around your closets and hampers seeking out a perfect fitting outfit that you looked good wearing last year. As you try it on, you realize right away it no longer fits; it appears that you have added a few extra pounds since the last time you have worn it. The first words out of your mouth are I need to go on a diet! So you realize that now is the time to curb your appetite and start thinking about getting back into those clothes. Your mind is set on a new approach to dieting, but you want to make sure you start a routine that fits your lifestyle. But where do you start? There are many different ways to choose a diet. Dieting should not be thought of as a means of starving yourself or a way to binge on bland foods and water. There is no magic little pill that will make these pounds go away no matter what advertisers may want you to believe. You have to adjust your lifestyle to make a physical change occur. Depending on your genetics this may not be as easy as you think. In general, a diet has always had a stigma attached to it as a punishment for overeating. People often associate a diet as a basic re-training for your body. In order to regain control and shed the pounds, you will have to endure countless hours of exercise as well as eating healthy. Thus, making it tough to eat fast food and snacking whenever you feel like it. How often do you find yourself at a fast-food chain ordering a value meal with an extra-large drink? If you break down the entire calories of your meal you will realize right away that you have consumed almost the entire allotted amount of calories in just one sitting. If, on the other hand, you had ordered a healthy salad and a diet soda you would be creating a healthier diet for yourself. All of these little changes add up in the daily calorie totals. So which diet do I choose? There is Atkins, Weight Watchers, and of course The South Beach diet. All of these have a different level of success and can be used to help you lose the weight. In order to choose one you must first understand which diet works best for your lifestyle. Atkins The Atkins diet consists of a high-protein, no carbohydrate diet. Thus, you can eat all the red meat, chicken, fish or pork as much as you want. You cannot eat any carbohydrates. Carbohydrates consist of bread, rice, and pasta. Yes, this means no pizza too. Atkins has amassed a large following and has created a brand name for itself. You can purchase Atkins products as well as go to public restaurants that service Atkins friendly meals. Weight Watchers Weight Watchers uses a point system based counting method to follow how much food you are allowed daily. Weight Watchers are fast food friendly and there are many books and websites that will break down meals (at home or fast food) and desserts to a number of points per serving. Your total intake can be anywhere from 20 to 40 points daily depending on your target weight. The more weight you lose, the less points you get to eat. Thus, your diet may start out at 35 points but your target diet may be around 24 points. Somewhere in between, you will learn to eat less to achieve these point totals. Weight Watchers teaches you that you can eat what you like but with moderation and smaller portions. It also does not believe in saying no to food. The South Beach Diet The South Beach Diet is broken down into three stages. In stage one, the dieter is not allowed to have products that contain sugar, carbohydrates, and alcohol. But, the individual will have unlimited access to other non-carb foods like meat, chicken, seafood, as well as a wide variety of dairy products. In week three, you begin to implement carbs into your diet. You will notice how carbs and sugars affect your body as you readjust them into this new eating pattern. You will learn to moderate them accordingly so that you continue to lose weight and stay on target. The final stage is opening up the menu to you. But because you have a good understanding of what these foods do to you, you have learned how to reserve your food intake through portion control and moderation. No diet is going to change your lifestyle completely without exercise. Thus, exercise will begin to play a major role in your success. The healthier you eat, coupled with a well-coordinated exercise routine will greatly improve your overall weight loss numbers. Your success will be determined by how much you have lost and how better you feel in as little as a month. Your exercise routine can vary depending on what type of aerobic exercise you choose. The primary goal of exercise is to keep your heart rate elevated at a targeted rate so your body will burn fat efficiently over the duration of the exercise period. It also may be a good idea to work with a personal trainer in the beginning to help develop a good work out routine. You should first consult a physician before starting any physical activity. 2006 www.successful-weight-loss.com Phil Rather, a noted researcher and writer, contributed this article for Successful Weight Loss. Tulips and Their Role in Different Cultures

By William Berg Tulips have been, and are still, being admired by people in many different regions and cultures. Wild Tulips are found in Europe, Africa and Asia. Their native area stretches from southern Europe to northern Africa, and proceeds eastward into Asia from Anatolia and Iran. The most prominent Tulip habitats are found on the steppes of Kazakhstan and among the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains, but wild Tulips can be found all the way into the very eastern parts of China and Japan. The Tulip has always been held in high esteem by the Middle East cultures and the European name Tulip is actually derived from the Persian word for turban. Some etymologists claim that the name was selected since a budding Tulip resembles a traditional turban, while other etymologists suggests that the term is instead the result of a misunderstanding Tulip flowers were commonly used to decorate the folds of the turban. If you study traditional folk art from Persia and Turkey you will Today, the Tulip is the national flower of Iran as well as of Turkey and the tulip is even suggested on the Iran flag. If you look at traditional Persian and Turkish folk art you will clearly see how important the Tulip motif is and have been. The Netherlands in Europe is another country strongly linked to the Tulip, and the Netherlands will for instance send Tulips to the Canadian capital Ottawa each year. During World War II, Canada aided in liberating the Netherlands from the German invasion and also served as a refuge for the Dutch Crown Princess who was later to become Queen Juliana. In the Europe as well as in the Ottoman Empire, episodes of so called Tulip Mania when tulips have been used for speculation have occurred. Historians still debate exactly how severe these waves of speculation was and how damaging the Tulip booms and subsequent crashes was to the respective economies. Some even claim that Tulip Mania strongly contributed to the final financial decline of the Ottoman Empire. Historians do not now exactly when and how the Tulip was introduced to Western Europe for the first time, and perhaps Tulips were brought to this part of the world several times before the flower really became appreciated and famous. One story claims that ambassador Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq brought Tulips to German attention as early as 1554. Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq had been sent from Ferdinand I of Germany to Suleyman the Magnificent and in one of his letters he write about seeing "an abundance of flowers everywhere; narcissus, hyacinths, and those which the Turks call tulipam, much to our astonishment, because it was almost midwinter, a season unfriendly to flowers". Botanists are however a bit sceptic to this letter, since Tulips do not bloom in midwinter, not even in the warm Middle East. Perhaps Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq confused the winter journey with an expedition that he participated in during a warmer part of the year of 1558. We know that Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq wrote and dated all his letters after his journeys, not while he was actually travelling. Tulips are just one of many flowers that have an important cultural significance in numerous religions. Others include the cherry tree and the Bamboo plant Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=William_Berg http://EzineArticles.com/?Tulips-and-Their-Role-in-Different-Cultures&id=293477 long term ambien

Trade Show Marketing - Getting Prepared for the Big Event

By Patty Stripes With the increase in number of tradeshows being held across the world, it has become imperative to check the trade shows credentials before you commit participation. Here are some quick tips on checks to ensure that you are not heading for a dud trade show: 1. Check previous history and years of experience including backing by any large industrial groups: This is the most obvious way to research on the event planners. Trade shows backed by large organizations would have greater availability of resources and marketing skills. 2. Demographics of previous trade shows: Did the last show done by the trade show provider have a decent show of visitors? Is the trade show provider boasting about the numbers on its marketing material or hiding it in some obscure corner for the number crunchers? Did the trade show provider have a professional organization draw up the demographics of the visitors? Do the demographics fit your requirement? Answers to these queries should help you decide if you should use this trade show as a sales and marketing vehicle for your company. 3. If there is a conference, who are the speakers? You should have at least heard of a few of the speakers or their organizations if they are speaking in the conference. A quick check should also be done to see if the speakers also have a booth at the tradeshow. Tradeshow booth providers usually give out speaker slots as an added incentive to exhibitors and you might like to avoid such events as they are not very genuine. 4. What is the timing of the trade show? Is it just time filler for the conference? If this is true, I would suggest that you avoid this trade event like the plague. The event planners are just putting in the booths as time filler and the trade show is not likely to be heavily promoted either. So just dont waste your marketing budget on such as event. You will all notice that such time filler exhibitions usually have very few booths in the first place and are located outside the exit area of the conference hall to catch the attendees as they dash off towards food and natures call. 5. What is the total number of booths and what is the occupancy rate a few weeks before the show? The thumb rule is that a trade show can have about 5 to 10 percent of empty stands about 2 weeks before the event which eventually gets filled in my last minute confirmations or by sponsors. If the numbers are higher that this, you should check the official reason given by the exhibitors to ensure that you dont end up participating in a show which has too many empty stands. 6. Is the tradeshow provider offering a desperate discount and doing unusual number of follow ups? If you get an offer for a trade show booth which is just too good to believe then it is probably too good to believe. Desperate discounts are offered by event planners as a last ditch attempt to sell all booths as you should only participate is such tradeshows if you have unique reason to do so. 7. Testimonials and repeat number of participants year after year is another good way to check on the trade show. If you see a large number of repeat participants over a number of years, it is a good way to determine the quality of the event. Quality of location and association with service providers also help in getting to know the seriousness with which the trade show providers approach their work. I hope this article is also read by trade show providers to realize what exhibitors look out for! The Truth About Laser Hair Removal

By Morgan Hamilton Generally, there are three ways of hair removal. My favorite one is laser hair removal. The other two methods shaving and waxing might be cheaper and more popular but they both have some negative sides while the laser hair removal doesn't have any. To begin with, when shaving you leave behind stubble. If your hairs are thick that stubble might be like a dark shadow; if your hairs are thin, then the stubble might be only slightly noticeable. But whatever you do, if you shave your hairs, they grow back immediately. There is a myth about shaving saying that it cause hair to grow back thicker and faster. This is wrong. However, it is true that hair starts growing back as soon as you shave it. The other alternative to shaving is waxing. The latter removes hair for a longer period of time leaving behind little or no stubble. However, waxing takes much longer and it is more expensive, provided you get it done by a professional. Even when you buy one of those do-it-yourself kits it will cost you more than a razor and some shaving cream. Though, the greatest disadvantage of waxing over shaving is that the first is quite unpleasant and might sometimes be even painful. My personal favourite method of getting rid of unsightly hair- laser hair removal is much less painful and it has a long-standing effect. It removes your unwanted hairs for a few years - from five to ten, sometimes even longer. If there is a disadvantage about this method, it is that it's quite expensive, so it cannot be applied to large areas of the body unless you have a fortune. Apart from being a wonderful way of getting rid of unwanted hair, laser hair removal is a fun thing to do on a first date. I've always liked to do unusual and interesting things on a first date and one day I came up with the idea of getting unsightly hairs burned off by small lasers in the company of my date. I think this is a great way to get to know each other. I had such a first-date experience three years ago with Frank - a pretty (but quite hairy) girl, and later we got married. Of course, I am ready to admit that laser hair removal may not be quite the best thing to do on a first date but why not consider it before actually going on one. If you have a 'unibrow'(this was my case), get it removed and no one will ever suspect you had one. If you are a woman suffering from dark facial hair, consider laser hair removal - it might turn out to be the best solution if you give it a try. Is It Possible to Completely Get Rid of Hemorrhoids?

By Viresh Rathod Statistics show that more than ten million Americans have hemorrhoids and around three million people seek medical treatment each year. The astonishing fact is that most of them do not get cured. This is not entirely the fault of doctors or medical advisors. The problem lies with the hemorrhoids patients in most cases. They rarely follow the medications and the accompanying life style changes that are advised by the physicians. Patients must first get to the root of the problem. Treating hemorrhoids is pointless unless you change the daily habits that contribute to cases of hemorrhoids. Here is a list of popular hemorrhoids treatment and advice given by doctor. 1) Rubber band ligation for second-degree internal hemorrhoids. 2) The Contact Laser technique, taking approximately 20 minutes for one large hemorrhoid and about 45 minutes for three. 3) Preparation H is a popular brand of medications used in the treatment of hemorrhoids. It was originally packaged in a tube like toothpaste, with a similar consistency. Physicians say, after undergoing these treatments there is a significant lowering of the intensity of the pain as compared to traditional techniques. Physicians also advice the following dietary and life style changes: 1) Drink 6 to 8 large glasses of water. 2) The daily diet should consist of high fibre foods. 3)Get regular to moderate exercise, do not sit or stand for long periods of time. 4)Never strain while lifting heavy objects, let your legs do the work for you. More Colors For Bridesmaids Dresses

By Victor Epand Sounds lovely! As its October, go for some rich gold's and warm ivories to break up the darkness. Silver would go just as well but I think gold is more suited to the season. Don't go for too much color as not only can it get difficult to tone, it'll look too busy. I always work on the '4' principle. 2 colors that tone
1 neutral shade (white, ivory, diamond white, cream etc)
1 glitzy color (gold or silver) Your 2 colors are for the groom and Bridesmaids. The neutral shades are usually the bridal gown colors.
The glitzy shade is to break up the color and add richness. You can take any away but don't add. i.e. don't substitute the gold for another color or there'll be too many colors. Going by your description of star shaped flowers, it would be nice to follow the theme through with a small bouquet of star shaped flowers. Cymbidium or Singapore orchids are beautiful and very delicate; I think they'd complement your gown detail perfectly. I believe they come in stems which would look lovely as a small teardrop bouquet, they hang rather than droop! As with all flowers, they do vary in color but I've seen them in the most beautiful deep creams. Some have a slightly pinkish centre which is preferable than the green looking ones. Keep the shades warm if you can. Paper whites are lovely as well; they have yellowy gold centers which will complement your gold theme. They would look nice as a small round bouquet. Do have a search on the internet and have a flick through some books for inspiration. If you take a picture of your dress round to some florists then they can also give you some ideas. I hope I've helped a little more, do take advantage of the florist's services to help you make the right choice. Go round to lots, get quotes and don't be afraid to haggle if you're on a budget. Never reveal your budget if you can help it, this helps prevent the florist from steering you towards a more expensive flower or adding a 'little extra' on your quote! Match the style of bouquet to your gown. I.e., if you have a fishtail or straight style, some long and elegant lilies or stemmed roses would look lovely carried as an over arm bouquet, for a princess style dress go for a full and round handheld bouquet and so on. Keep the theme, modern with modern, traditional with traditional etc. Colorize, steer clear of green foliage as I think this will take over. I think a simple had-tied bouquet of cream roses would be a safe bet. You could have some gold detail put in with your bouquet - you can get some lovely wire and pearl sprays which can be dotted in with the flowers for a more contemporary look. If you'd like to, you're more than welcome to send me the style number and designer of your dress. I can then take a look and will be able to advise you a little better once I know what you'll be wearing. In reference to your man, keep to the black suit and white shirt. Ivory shirts tend to look dirty! For him to match in with you, add a gold tie/cravat. I love waistcoats and to set him apart from his groomsmen, a gold and ivory waistcoat would look lovely (or cummerbund if he's wearing a tux). Grow Your Own Food; Find Health and Fitness in the Garden!

By Vikki Scovell This week there has been much excitement in our household; we picked our own vegetables and ate them for the first time; ok so it was only a bunch of salad leaves, but they whipped the pants off salad in a bag from the shops. Whats more, I only started to grow things a few weeks ago, but have still eaten salad from the garden three nights running. I started by clearing a messy flowerbed, and bought some runner bean plants and a couple of tomato plants from a local gardening shop. I though that this would satisfy my botanical cravings, but then my mum gave me some seeds, and baby lettuce plants, and suddenly it was looking a little more like a real veggie patch. Before I knew it, I had run out of space, so I used some old wooden fruit crates from the green grocers, lined them with a compost sack, and filled them with earth; now they are housing my herbs, pepper plants and some Borlotti Beans. The little kitchen garden has taken on a life of its own and moved out of the flowerbeds and into every container that I can find. There are runner beans, peas, black turtle beans, borlotti beans, red peppers, chili peppers, basil, parsley, chard, lettuce, spicy mizuna and other hot leaves, 2 varieties of rocket, parsley, tomatoes, little Alpine strawberries for the children, and courgette plants in big pots. I have really been enjoying my time in the garden; I burnt a good few calories turning over the flower beds, and digging out some stubborn old roots, have spent some beautiful hours in the sunshine, and watering my little plants in the evening is less of a chore, and more a time for relaxation and contemplation. The children have been very excited about the vegetables, and spend happy moments watering or collecting snails in a bucket (to be relocated). There has been great anticipation waiting for the tiny strawberries to ripen, and searching under the leaves to find them. If you have any space at all, you can rediscover your link with real food by growing something. There is still time to throw some lettuce and rocket seeds into a pot, or pick up some young plants to grow-on. You can put runner beans in a pot, supported by a wig-wam of canes, or grow some chili peppers on a kitchen window. If you have a spare pot, buy some salad leaf mix, the young plants grow quickly and you will be picking your own summer salad within the month. I cannot recommend the experience highly enough; growing your own food is great exercise, the process is educational for children, and the end results give satisfaction and superior nourishment. There is a different time scale in the garden; nothing happens immediately, and you are forced to slow down and relax the pace of life, something we could all benefit from; the complete opposite of fast food. The crowning glory has been collecting things to wash and put straight onto the plate, so here was my dinner last night to give you some inspiration: Roasted Vegetable Bruchetta with garden salad: Roughly cut some onions (red and white) and some sweet pointed red peppers, and roast for about 30-40 minutes in a little olive oil, salt, pepper and any herbs (I love thyme). Toast some bread (I used home made white) and when it has cooled, rub with a peeled garlic clove (I use the whole thing, but I really love garlic) and drizzle some olive oil over the top. Pile the roasted vegetables onto the garlicy toast, and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. Serve with lots of leafy salad and rocket from the garden, and some sliced tomatoes; a perfect summer dinner. Vikki Scovell BA(hons) PG DIP is a fully qualified Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach. Interview with Valerie Hart, Author of "The Bounty of Central Florida"

By Irene Watson Irene Watson, Publishing Editor of Reader Views, is pleased to have as our guest, Valerie Hart, author of "The Bounty of Central Florida." Hi Valerie, thank you for taking the time to participate in this interview. Irene: Valerie, why do you feel "The Bounty of Central Florida" was an important book for you to write? What objectives did you have? Valerie: Regional cookbooks have flooded the market. Southwestern, Northwestern, Cuban, Caribbean, Cajun and combinations of these including America's innovation called Fusion that incorporates Asian with any of the others highlight regions and the new creative chefs who are incorporating the fresh ingredients of the areas. When we moved from Miami to Central Florida 15 years ago, the cuisine changed drastically. Aside from local Italian eateries that featured heavy tomato-based Sicilian cookery, and a smattering of Mexican catering to the migrant workers in this citrus area, mama-papa restaurants north of Orlando served up a unique cuisine of their very own. This was based on their roots of southern America with a rustic edge of accessible fish and game simply grilled or fried and accompanied by fruits and vegetables freshly plucked from the trees and earth. Every spring-fed lake yields bass. The larger lakes are inundated with alligators and tilapia. The St. John's brackish river is rich with blue crab and shrimp, and its tributaries are filled with redfish, bass and snook. The wood ducks seem to exist solely for the pleasure of the pan, and, just a bit south in Osceola County, wild turkeys and venison breed bundantly for the happy hunters. And, as in the rest of the south, barbecue reigns supreme with Central Florida's own renditions of sweet, spicy and mustard based sauces slathered over slow smoked gigantic pork ribs. My objective, as food writer for The Daily Commercial, was to make people aware of the bounty of the area. Irene: What challenges did you have while writing this book and how did you overcome them? Valerie: The challenges were delightful. My many trips up the St. John's River with the antique boaters brought me into direct contact with the people who live and derive their livelihood from the creeks of the intercostals waterways. My membership and association with the NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation) not only taught me how to fry a whole turkey, but instilled respect for this dedicated group of conservationists who teach women survival in the wilderness as responsible gun control to children. The most difficult challenge, however, was writing the book while being faced with Monday's deadline of writing my Thursday's newspaper column and teaching cooking at the shelter for the homeless. There just wasn't time to do it all, and I was spending more and more hours creating recipes late
at night and opening my computer to record them before the sun came up. Irene: Are the recipes your own creation? Have some of them been passed down through the family to you? Valerie: The recipes are my own, derived from my sense of taste and smell and desire to create. My background of education in France, (later, Cordon Bleu courses after I had begun to teach cooking in Miami), and our 30 year business in Italy, where we had an apartment in Florence and traveled extensively through northern Italy, brought me into contact with a multitude
of country chefs and "nonnas" (Italian grandmothers) in home kitchens who shared "secrets" passed down through the generations. Irene: How did you get into cooking? Did you cook as a child? Where did you learn to cook? Do you have any funny stories while learning to cook that you can relate to? Valerie: I would love to say that I learned to cook from my Mother and Grandmother but, fortunately, this is not true. My Mother and Grandmother had absolutely no talent in the kitchen, probably because they always cook to do it for them. The only foods my Mother knew how to cook were roast beef, turkey and broiled lamb chops. Those were the days when all the fat was left on to singe into a crust. We not only ate the top fat on the beef and between the bones of the chops; we relished it. And, the trick was to eat the turkey and beef before the gravy poured over it congealed into a hard, white mass. We had a German cook for many years. My parents traveled extensively, leaving me in her care. The kitchen was a sensual wonderland of chocolate and pastry cream and veal that she delicately dipped into beaten eggs and then into homemade bread crumbs before frying to a golden brown delicacy she called Wiener Schnitzel that she served with fried potatoes and buttery noodles. Elizabeth never used an electric mixer, but beat butter and sugar and egg whites by hand to make her 6 layer German Doboschtorte, rich chocolate Viennese Sachartorte and Hungarian Caramel Cake. She was my first culinary mentor, and her recipes appear in my first cookbook, The New
Tradition Cookbook. Irene: I note in your bio you aspired to be an opera singer but ended up in the food writing career and then in a cooking career. Are there times that you would like to turn back the pages and pursue a career as a singer? Valerie: Sometimes, although my life would have been very different. I shall forever remember studying under the great Andr Bog on the stage of the Paris Grand Opra. I obviously did not have enough ambition, or perhaps realized I did not have the voice destined for greatness. Irene: Do you have a favorite recipe from this book? Why? Valerie: Guests and family who dine with us usually request that I prepare the Key Lime Cheesecake or Flourless Individual Chocolate Souffls for dessert. My duckling is the children's favorite and I will offer 2-3 sauce variations for their pleasure. I really love the Butternut Squash Soup and
refreshing Strawberry Salad. I make dozens of Mushroom Roll hors d'oeuvre and dessert Profiteroles to freeze for unexpected company and, because our lime trees are so prolific, you will always find a frozen Lime Pie. Irene: This is a second cookbook for you. Your first was The New Tradition Cookbook which was published in 1988. What did you learn after writing the first one that you changed in your second book, The Bounty of Central Florida? Valerie: My first cookbook was written as a result of my years as the food writer for the newspaper on Miami Beach and the luncheon restaurant I had for 15 years at my husband's wholesale furniture showroom, Imports for the Trade. The restaurant was my test kitchen. We did not sell the food but, rather, offered it to designers and their clients as one would in one's home. The buffet that changed daily became so popular that people lined up around the block. We served over 100 people each day in the restaurant we built within the showroom with bricks from the old Union Station in Chicago that had been torn down. Although most of the format of the first book was based on American cooking and my rendition of French and Italian cooking, the marvelous ethnicity of Miami Beach allowed me to discover recipes for Matzo Balls, Geflte Fish, Stuffed Cabbage, Brisket of Beef and Potato Pancakes that I featured in the newspaper during the Jewish holidays. I would go down to what has become the "in" area now known as "SoBe" which, during the late '60s and '70s was still populated solely by the elderly Jewish. I would approach the ladies who were shopping. Each one had a different recipe for the same dish, and each thought hers was the best. I would then go home and experiment and test and test again until the combination of ingredients was to my liking. Then I would write my food column. The common denominator of the two books is my belief that people like to read about exquisite cuisine but want to cook and eat basic food. Irene: What are you hoping comes out of this cookbook experience for you? Are you planning on writing another one? Valerie: I do not know if I will ever write another cookbook, but I have so many recipes that do not appear in the first two that I am tempted. Anyone who cooks knows that there is always a new and different method of preparation to please the palate. There is never a last chapter to cooking. Irene: Thank you Valerie. Is there anything else that you would like to add about your cookbook or your experience? Valerie: I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself. This is the first time I have been asked these questions and the interview has been most enjoyable. Having Trouble Losing the Last Five Pounds

By Kamau Austin If you are like many women, you may find that no matter how hard you try, you just cant lose the last five pounds you need to meet your weight loss goals. For many women, the root of this problem may be a condition known as hypothyroidism. This condition is characterized by a decreased basal metabolic rate (BMR). This means the amount of calories required for the body to sustain life in a state of rest is lower than the BMR of a woman with a thyroid which is functioning properly. Have Your Thyroid Tested If you have been exercising regularly, following a healthy diet and taking other measures to lose weight without seeing results, you might want to consider having your thyroid tested to determine if it is functioning properly. This is important because, according to the American Thyroid Association, It has been appreciated for a very long time that there is a complex relationship between thyroid disease, body weight and metabolism. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism in both animals and humans. The test for thyroid function is rather simple, minimally invasive and it doesnt take long to obtain results. In most cases, your doctor will examine your thyroid visually and manually to determine if the gland appears to be an abnormal size. Additionally, the doctor will also draw a small amount of blood for testing in the laboratory. The blood is tested to determine the quantity of thyroid hormones in the blood. An excess of the hormone may indicate hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, while a deficiency of the hormone may indicate hypothyroidism, an under-active thyroid. Hypothyroidism is most commonly linked to weight gain. The Good News about Hypothyroidism and Weight Gain If you have your thyroid tested and are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, there is some good news. Most importantly, the condition is treatable and your doctor can prescribe a treatment plan that should help you regulate the amount of thyroid hormone in your body. Once the hormone levels are regulated, you should be able to shed the last few pounds your body has been maintaining. The other good news associated with weight gain and hypothyroidism is that the amount of weight typically gained as a direct result of hypothyroidism is minimal and is more likely associated with salt and water retention than fat. According to the American Thyroid Association, The cause of the weight gain in hypothyroid individuals is also complex and not always related to excess fat accumulation. Most of the extra weight gained in hypothyroid individuals is due to excess accumulation of salt and water. Massive weight gain is rarely associated with hypothyroidism. In general 5-10 pounds of body weight may be attributed to the thyroid depending on the severity of the hypothyroidism. This means the amount of weight which will be stubborn and difficult to shed due to thyroid deficiency is not a lot of weight. Additionally, the weight will likely be lost with minimal effort once the hormone is regulated because it is usually just water rather than accumulated fat. Treating Hypothyroidism with Herbal Supplements If you suspect an under-active thyroid is the root of your inability to lose the last few pounds, visit your doctor. This is important because it is critical to carefully diagnose the function of the thyroid. It is also important to seek a doctors input, even if the thyroid is not at fault, because they can help you establish an exercise regimen and diet plan that can help you achieve your weight loss goals. You should also consult your physician if you intend to use herbal supplements to help achieve your weight loss goals. Supplements such as Thyvox can be useful for some women seeking to lose weight. You can learn more about Thyvox from the following web address: www.Thyvox.com. If your doctor is not familiar with the substance, it may be worthwhile to do some research on your own and seek out a dietician who can provide you with more insight into the use of herbal supplements such as Thyvox. Autumn Tree Colors - Tulip Poplar

By Paul Wonning Liriodendron tulipifera
Family - Magnoliaceae - Magnolia The stately tulip poplar is so called because of the tulip-like blossoms it sports in early spring. Unfortunately, by the time the tree is large enough to begin blooming, it is so tall that the attractive blossoms are too high for most people to enjoy. The leaf is an easy one to identify, as it is tulip shaped, thus lending another reason to name the tree tulip tree, or tulip poplar. The leaves in autumn change to a lovely shade of yellow, contrasting nicely with the gray, smooth bark. The yellow poplar is one of only two species of tulip poplars inhabiting the earth. North Americas representative is native to the eastern United States, occupying nearly every state east of the Mississippi River except the extreme northeastern states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Liriodendron tulipifera is a member of the Magnolia family, it being the northernmost member of that tribe. Tulip poplar is a valuable wildlife tree, as the seed is consumed by various birds, squirrels, mice and rabbits. Rabbits and deer browse the twigs and foliage of young trees and rabbits also sometimes eat the bark of young trees during the hard winter season. The lumber is also a valuable resource, good for furniture, interior woodworking and plywood. The majestic yellow poplar, state tree of Indiana, with its golden yellow autumn leaves and smooth gray bark is a lovely addition to the fall woodlands. Easy to identify with its tulip shaped leaves, the seeds are a valuable resource for all types of wildlife. 2006

Understand the Effects of Botox and Collagen Treatments

By Amy-Jo Strutt When you are younger, you dont really notice the pressure society puts on people to stay slim, trim and young looking. Whether the pressure is real or not, more and more people are turning to cosmetic surgery and treatments to regain their youthful appearance. A cosmetic treatment growing in popularity is botulinum toxin or its more common name, Botox. It is a popular non-surgical injection that will temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and on the neck. Basically, Botox is a toxin that paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles. While the muscles are paralyzed, the skin appears smoother and softer looking. Another alternative to consider are collagen injections which also helps create the appearance of younger looking skin. Some studies have also indicated that Botox has other advantages such as relieving migraine headaches, reducing excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the eyes and neck. Although injections are only temporary, they can last up to 6 months. Collagen injections are also only temporary lasting anywhere from 3 to 6 months. They are becoming more popular as well because they are quick to administer and dont require any sedation. The one caution about these injections is that if you have allergies to beef or lidocaine, you are likely not a candidate for collagen injections because of the significant risk of an allergic reaction. If you have wrinkles between your eyelids and chin, the most effective way to address them is to fill them. The two most popular choices to use are fat and collagen, often used for smaller areas while fat is mostly used for larger areas. We highly recommend before proceeding with any cosmetic treatment you consult your family doctor. Even though Botox has been around since 1982, be sure to use a certified plastic surgeon that has years of experience. Your looks are at stake here so you want to do as much due diligence as possible before moving forward. Kill Obesity With Phentermine

By Ian Mason You can kill obesity with Phentermine, but you cannot live on Phentermine for ever. Phentermine is a drug that is used to suppress you appetite in case you have the urge to slurp sugary or fatty foods. Phentermine acts a suppressant by increasing your blood pressure and your heart rate there by releasing juices in to your stomach which decreases appetite. When this diet pill is consumed you will not have an urge to go in for the sugary or fatty foods. But then this is not healthy living. You cannot live healthy by popping a diet pill daily and then forgetting it for the rest of the day. Healthy living is having a good workout at least four days a week and going for walks in your neighbor hood park for about twenty minutes daily. This is going to keep you fit and fine for a long time. This is the most natural way to lose weight. If you are declared obese by physician then it is high time that you chalked out a plan to lose weight. Make a routine and follow it strictly. Do not get lazy and find a solace in I will do it tomorrow. The tomorrow'" attitude is never going to get you any where. The tomorrow is never going to come. You will realize this only when you are being wheeled in a stretcher for your operation. Dieting is also beneficial for your body. Having fried foods one in a while is not going to harm your health, but then living on junk foods will eventually get you? There is a wrong impression that diet drinks are healthy. Yes they have less calorific content than their counter parts, but then plain old water is healthy. Once you get hooked to junk foods then there is no way out. You are too lazy to cook foods to eat, this leads to adding on calories by junk food. Fried foods are biggest hitters below the belt. If you can fast once in a week there is nothing like it. Phentermine is prescribed for obese people to help them reduce weight as an immediate measure. Take Phentermine under strict medical supervision. The drug makes you dizzy and drowsy. Do not do heavy jobs and stand near high speed machinery if you are under the influence of the drug. This will cause fatalities. Even though no side effects have been observed on people using Phentermine, it is always advisable to take this under medical supervision. Along with taking Phentermine you should do your workouts and dieting. Phentermine has some withdrawal symptoms. You should not stop taking Phentermine suddenly. It may cause depression and other related medical disorders. When you are under Phentermine, you should have stopped eating high calorie food. Phentermine is going to do you no good if you are munching away on those fried goodies and chocolates. As I have discussed earlier, Phentermine is not a solution by itself. This is a helping hand in your decision to fight obesity. It can help you kill the urge; it cannot help you kill the greed. Decide for yourself whether Phentermine is right for you when you visit PhenForum.com, the phentermine discussion forum and weight loss support group offering extensive research on Phentermine diet pills as well as weight loss tips for healthy, permanent weight loss. From Breakup To Bliss - Living With Uncertainty

By Randy Hurlburt Relationships are complicated, confusing, and uncertain. I wish they were not. I hate uncertainty. I want to know (now!) if it will last, if it will be good, when we will have sex, what to do next, and so on (and on and on...). But giving in to these uncertainties is a form of insecurity. The reality is that the future will reveal itself in its own time, and pushing for resolution sooner than that is a good way to make mistakes. Patti and Ralph (not their real names) have been dating for three years. The relationship is a serious though not exclusive one. They spend a lot of time together, and have talked of marriage, but Patti is not ready. Ralph loves her very much but wonders if he is wasting his time. He has gone out with others, but until recently hasn't found anyone he loves more. Three months ago he met Sarah and is feeling a strong sense of attraction to her. Ralph feels a lot of anxiety, and is considering breaking up with Patti. He wants to pursue his new love interest in Sarah, but isn't sure how it will go there either. He wants to be open and honest with Patti, but doesn't want to hurt her and doesn't want to burn any bridges in case things don't work out with Sarah or in case Patti suddenly wants a more complete relationship. This situation is very common. I hear many different versions of it in my coaching practice. And nothing happens "suddenly." Ralph (and the many others like him) find themselves "on the cusp" (meaning the situation could go either way). They are uncertain as to which way it will go (or what to do), and as a result feel anxious, even depressed, and can sometimes find it difficult to eat or sleep. They want to make a decision and get the uncertainty over with! What Ralph needs to do is to develop the skill of "living with uncertainty." There are a lot of uncertainties in Ralph's situation. Patti is no doubt moving in some direction (toward or away from him), but he doesn't know which direction it is or how long it will take. Neither does he know what the relationship may look like along the way. His interest in Sarah is still fresh, still in the infatuation stage, and there remain a lot of open questions about its future. It's fortunate for Ralph that he is not in an exclusive relationship. His dilemmas and anxiety would be even worse if he were married or had an exclusivity agreement. What he needs to do is to is to take this one day at a time. Because this condition may extend for quite some time, he will have to build up his emotional strength. He will need to work at resolving both relationships and work to be as honest as possible with all parties. None of this will happen overnight, but he can feel good about himself if he is working towards those goals. Progress will not be linear. One day he will feel pulled more towards Patti, the next day more towards Sarah. And "resolving" each relationship may mean different things. With Patti it may mean building it towards a good friendship if Sarah keeps coming on strong. With Sarah it may mean building a "trial relationship" on an interim basis while waiting to see what happens with Patti. You may feel that I am advocating "two-timing." I am not. I am advocating dealing as constructively as possible with the realities of life situations that present uncertainties and create anxieties. In this situation there is not an exclusivity arrangement, and this illustrates the importance of delaying such arrangements, be they verbal agreements, engagements, or marriage. (Three years may be a little long... but the issue is readiness, not time!) The necessary skills for dealing with uncertainty are patience, living in the moment, slow-motion small decisions, not being attached to any particular outcome, gradually revealing your true feelings, and finding plenty of other distractions to keep your mind off the problem. Understanding why people are uncertain and why resolution is so slow is also an important skill. Ralph can feel good about himself if he is constructively working towards the resolution of his issues while not forcing them into pre-conceived molds or premature decisions. Why the Minority are Rich

By Yigit Djevdet Scientific Explanation of Wealth
Wealth is a very contentious subject because almost everyone has a view on it. It is an ancient question which boasts answers in almost every corner of knowledge and experience. There is the scientific explanation, the spiritual explanation, the economic explanation, the psychological explanation and the plain old weird explanation. In this article, Im going for the scientific explanation. This pays no attention to who we actually are when we start out in life. It simply says that there is only a finite amount of resources in the world and the capitalist system of wealth creation functions as a hierarchy resembling a pyramid. The lower levels house the majority of people who toil day and night to support the minority levels above them. The Pyramid Model
Consider a pyramid at the top of which sits the worlds richest man. Below him the next 100 and below them the next 400. Using a criterion of 100(n x n), where n represents the next level, we find that the people at the very bottom, some 32.5 million of them, are 570 levels below the top. If we now add the people at each level we come to 6.1 billion which is approximately the population of the world. So you see, if the pyramid is to exist we MUST have people at different levels of wealth. Clearly it is possible to rise through the levels, as well as drop to ones below. We are all capable of going down because it is very easy. Just squander all your money, make a bad investment, give it away etc. and before you know it you are at ground level. The trick is to go up. So we inevitably ask the obvious question. How do we go up
It's almost like a console game. Rising through the levels and reaching some eventual goal. I suppose if we must continue the analogy, the difficulty level we set ourselves has to be the different methods open to us and which of these we select to use. But that is for another article. As it turns out it is perfectly possible to receive a helping hand from those above you as well as a friendly push from those around you. A combination of both will make your job easier. Examples of getting a helping hand from above are people like relatives who will lend you capital without the urgency of paying them back or even a free handout. Perhaps some kind of inheritance will help. If none of this is open to you, your job is somewhat more difficult. You need to rely on those around you who are at the same level as you and they cannot afford to give you anything substantial. So you have to create something and sell it to them as well as those above you. If you are successful, your bank balance goes up and so do you. I've deliberately left out "bank borrowing" because I believe one should avoid this method of raising capital simply because the chances are that the loan will require to be paid back before you have made enough money to pay it back. Just thinking about it makes it obvious that if you want to go up in this world and your relatives cannot help you, not many people know you, and there is no incentive for anyone from above you to help either, you have next to no chance of ever rising above the level that you find yourself. Options like gambling and lotteries are the only possibilities left but the odds simply make these things not even worth mentioning. The key to it is publicity. You need to do or create something, within the law, that will touch large numbers of people. It really does not matter what it is. Even if it is something as simple as helping people fill a glass of water, it can create this publicity for you or for your product. In the case of fortune through fame, you yourself are the product. I'll leave you to ponder this. Loan Refinancing - 5 Easy Tips

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Greg_Thomson]Greg Thomson The refinancing business can seem like a jungle where lenders compete against each other with
your rates and payment plans as weapons. Should you decide to refinance your loan, there is a
lot of money to be saved, mainly by choosing the right lender but also by avoiding hidden fees,
pre-payment penalties and high rates. This article outlines 5 easy tips that you can follow when refinancing your loans. 1. Research rates at many different lenders!! By doing this you assure that when you apply for
the refinancing loan, this is your best deal. You can apply for pre-approval but if
the lender pulls your credit history it may effect your credit score. You can avoid this by
not giving your social security number. 2. As mentioned earlier, your original lender may have a pre-payment or early payment penalty
that you will want to avoid. The best thing is of course to look in to this before you sign up
with any lender. If your current loan has this kind of penalty, make sure you would still save
money should you decide to refinance. 3. Pay close attention to closing costs at different lenders. If the closing cost is very high
at one lender you will have to take that into consideration in your decision process. 4. Many companies present the information above as Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and this includes the interest rate, fees and closing costs. To compare two different lenders
accurately ask for the APR instead of the interest rate. 5. Get your APR, interest rate, closing cost and possible pre-payment penalty in writing before you decide anything. This insures that there are no hidden fees and that you can be confident in
your choice of a refinance plan. A quick summary; ask for APR when contacting lenders, do not give out your social security number
